This long-awaited collection chronicling Neil Young’s first decade as a musician features enough jaw-dropping revelations to make it more than worth the wait. An early instrumental single with the Squires, as well as previously unreleased material, including a track named “I Wonder” that’s the clear blueprint for the Young classic “Don’t Cry No Tears,” tracks with Buffalo Springfield, early demos of “Sugar Mountain” and “Nowadays Clancy Can’t Even Sing,” alternate mixes of the early solo work and entire live concerts all make for an overwhelming experience. Young’s talent is evident from the beginning. The Squires’ “I’ll Love You Forever” is a raw piece of pure Young melancholy folded into a traditional love ballad. “(I’m a Man and) I Can’t Cry” casts Young as a potential country-influenced singer. The narrative here is completely gripping as Young becomes an increasingly confident studio and live recording artist, blossoming into the idiosyncratic singer-songwriter who brings the world “Only Love Can Break Your Heart,” “Birds,” and “Down By the River” all of which have been re-mastered for maximum effect.

This was not worth the wait.... !!!

I have been a Neil Young fan for 20 years and have been waiting for this for a decade. The sad, honest truth is we all were expecting so much more, more rare tracks, more unreleased live recordings, more CSNY outtakes, etc. Yes, there are about 20 unreleased songs to cherish and enjoy, but the lack of any substantial new material is really unforgiveable. There must be at least 3-4 full length live shows from 69-72 - where are they? Where is the FULL Fillmore show including his infamous acoustic set? I hope the next Volume is better - don't let us down again.

HUGE RIP-OFF MAN!!

Yes, I'm a fan but not drinkin' the Kool-Aid for this one. A real recycling job. As they used to say in the hippie days this is a "huge rip-off man!" Guess Neil needs some quick bucks given the economy. Asking fans to spend all this money for mostly previously released material is unbelievable. Most of the tunes are recycled from other albums you probably already have. The unreleased material is unreleased for a good reason. Not all that good. Best advice is to buy any tunes you like individually - if you must have them and don't already own them. I really wish he had just released a single/double album of unreleased work. No such luck.

Please split this collection into separate cd's !!!

It's not bad, but if you are a true Neil Young Fan, you already have most of this stuff. Most of these tracks are just remastered versions of tracks that have already been released. The Springfield demos are nice, but most people have heard them on the bootlegs. I was hoping there would be more unreleased tracks and rehearsals. It's nice but 79 bucks is pretty steep, especially, since I've already bought Massey Hall and the Fillmore East cd's. They should split them into separate discs, so fans don't have to buy duplicates. C'mon Neil ! Stop bleeding your fans!!! Show'em some respect!!! Without your loyal fans, you wouldn't be driving that LincVolt!!!
