iTunes Review
Rod Stewart was at the peak of his powers when he cut Never a Dull Moment. The ensemble playing behind him was still as thick and crunchy as his voice, with the drums full of fat, driving beats, the guitars cranking out sleazy, bluesy licks in a brilliant mix of acoustic and electric convergence, and organs that trickle fairy dust at opportune moments. “You Wear It Well” was the touching, reflective tune. The cover of Bob Dylan’s “Mama You Been On My Mind” nods towards Stewart’s folk roots, but takes a free reign with the arrangement adding daring country accents. Jimi Hendrix’s “Angel” is the sweet surprise, as it grounds Hendrix’s spectral ballad in Stewart’s rootsy soulfulness, while the blues classic “I’d Rather Go Blind” and the Sam Cooke R&B standard “Twistin’ the Night Away” sound as if they’d been written with Stewart in mind, so perfect is his execution. There simply isn’t a misstep here. Stewart’s originals kick even harder, as “True Blue” wastes no time getting down to business. “Los Paraguayos” shambles out with inspired guitar licks coaxing Stewart along and “Italian Girls” hints at the playboy days ahead.
Customer Reviews
One of the two albums that made Rod Stewart
This album and Every Picture Tells a Story define who Rod Stewart is to my generation. What came after can be interesting, especially the ballads, but these are the songs that resonate. I tried to cherry pick this one but finally submitted to buying the album (thanks for the new Complete This Album function). I even wanted the Interludings piece and couldn't see paying a buck for 40 seconds. Classic music from someone who is still going strong but never would have made it without putting down these strong roots.
ROD STEWART/NEVER A DULL MOMENT
This early work is best listened in it's entirety--start to finish. It represents classic Rod prior to early 1970's Pop/Disco. I have a cassette, LP, CD so this offering is a good value. You wear it well was the main hit on AM radio. Earlier Album Every Picture tells a story had Maggie May. Pop in the CD and enjoy... it is so much more appreciative of Rods true talent. You won't even miss flipping over the LP after side #1, or having the cassette jam up in your car's player.
Great vocals, lyrics - brings back memories...
I loved the band Faces and Rod Stewart still carried that type of raspy, yet memorable tonal quality into his first few albums: this one, Gasoline Alley and Every Picture Tells a story. I remember the camps forming around the soft soothing sounds of the time and the rough, even a bit off key voices like Stewart's.
