Nashville-based singer/songwriter Steff Mahan's third album has the feel of diary entries set to music — in this case, modern country with a touch of Bonnie Raitt-like bluesiness. Mahan testifies to the power of renewal even as she chronicles her bittersweet longings and regrets. Tunes like “Forgive Me,” “Things I Knew About You” and “Water Under the Bridge” glance backwards with sensitivity and hard-won knowledge. Mahan combines introspection with Nashville-style storytelling, offering quick but telling vignettes in the title number and “Pray for Peace.” There are upbeat moments as well, most notably the smoldering “If I Let You Go” and the slinky “Find Yourself.” “Carnival Ride” (a sweet childhood memory) and “When I Need It Most” (a plea for understanding through the rough times) stand out among the ballads. The album gets an extra kick from Mahan’s spirited backup band, recorded in a loose, live-feeling setting. Never a Long Way Home is a song collection displaying both craft and heart, sung by an artist who wins extra points for her honesty.

Never a long way home
The third album from Steff Mahan has finally arrived. For those fans of Steff Mahan, this is a long awaited addition to our musical bookshelves. Finally fan favorites like "Carnival Ride" and "Water under the bridge" are available. Steff has a loyal and strong fan base throughout the country, and this new album has long been anticipated. As a huge fan of Steff and her electric acoustical performances I am happy to say this a "less produced" album and has more of a "live" sound. Old and new fans of Steff will love this album because it has a truly authentic "Steff" sound.
Wonderful Spirit
Many of Steff's songs from this album were played at a concert in a cozy KC venue and I was thoroughly impressed. Check out her other albums and catch her live sometime! You won't be disappointed!!
