Album Review

The second release from this Finnish trio (following 2008's Fulfill the Curse on the obscure Razorback label) represents at best a slight evolution, but more accurately a consolidation, of their already retro sound. They take the downtuned Swedish death metal of Grave, Dismember, and Dissection and blend it with sludgy doom, throwing in some galloping NWOBHM guitars in the Iron Maiden tradition from time to time, and put ultra-guttural vocals on top. It's a somewhat patchwork blend; the melodic guitar breaks in particular seem to have little to do with everything else going on, and their track titles — "The House of Hammer," "Night of the Deathcult," "Terror Castle," "Theme from Return of the Evil Dead" — imply a goofy sense of humor that's not represented in their playing. Perhaps the biggest problem with Never Cross the Dead, though, is that the songs are simply too long — most run between six and eight minutes, as the downtuned riffs crawl along endlessly. While the album has a few decent moments, it just doesn't provide enough reward for the demands it places on the listener.

Great Death/Doom

Hooded Menace takes the plodding black and white death/doom of the debut and adds a splash of color in the form of some Dismember-influenced lead guitar (specifically of the "Indecent and Obscene" variety, lots of dark minor pentatonic stuff). The songs on this album really take you on a journey, with complex and lengthy structures and lots of tempo shifts (surprising when you consider the specific subset of the genre they play in). Each composition is fairly self contained and closes itself off nicely, giving this album a feel more reminiscent of a collection of horror short stories than a novel. Recommended if you're into Asphyx or Coffins.

Great doom metal

Sounds like Dismember in slow motion.

love this band..

I have had this album since it was made available in the states and I love it. I can't get enough of the horror sounding doom metal that they do so well and better than most. I can't see how anyone could ever give this album a bad rating and still call themselves a metalhead. You should be ashamed!!
