Album Review

While his aging contemporaries took a variety of tacks to keep up with changing fashions, from adopting more synthesized, percussive production styles to assembling an orchestra and singing standards, James Taylor just kept playing a summer concert tour each year, and periodically putting out another collection of similar-sounding songs. Never Die Young was unusual only in that there was no big oldies cover from the '50s or '60s — every song was written or co-written by Taylor — but otherwise it addressed the same audience in much the same terms as he always had. The title song and "Baby Boom Baby" (both Adult Contemporary hits) referred to the passage of time, and the rest floated on a sea of yuppie contentment. "I work hard to see that you remember my name," he sang, and that work seemed to consist of reminding his listeners why they had liked him in the first place.

A terrific album

The "commercial" review service cited on iTunes can't seem to get past sneering at James Taylor for the "sameness" of his music from album to album, but this is a very shallow way to approach his music. Taylor's musicianship is impeccable, and his appreciation for jazz chording and phrasing is underappreciated. Listen, for example, to what's churning under the simple melodic surface (in terms of chord progressions) in "First Of May," and to the way the band drops slick syncopated beats on "Sweet Potato Pie." And "Sun On The Moon" is a hoot. Download this album and enjoy!

Perfect

I still remember seeing JT on Saturday Night Live when I was a kid singing Sweet Potato Pie. It' why I bought this albumn when I got older. One of my favorite cd's to this day. Every few years I come back to it.

Great Stuff Lasts

The more I listen to this album, the more I appreciate what James put into it. What I love about this well-crafted work is it's lasting quality. How many of us have a loquacious friend like 'T-Bone' or a long-lost 'Baby Boom Baby' who keeps us wondering.....? Valentine's Day is pure fun with language and 'Runaway Boy' is just pure fun. I highly recommend quiet time, a glass of wine and a good listen to 'Never Die Young'. In fact, I think I'll do just that.

When people use the term "singer/songwriter" (often modified by the word "sensitive") in praise or in criticism, they're thinking of James Taylor. In the early '70s, when he appeared with his introspective songs, acoustic guitar, and calm, understated singing style, he mirrored a generation's emotional exhaustion after tumultuous times. Just as Bing Crosby's reassuring voice brought the country out of the Depression and through World War II, Taylor's eased the transition from '60s activism and its...
