Really great to see Epica on iTunes!
Here’s what Wikipedia says: “Epica is a Dutch symphonic metal band which puts emphasis on the use of operatic elements and death grunts, also performing some song passages in Latin. “ I hope this is still true. I am 54 years old, so I was here early enough to grow up with a number of earlier stages of Rock music. I still cherish the music of my youth, but I long ago abandoned “young” and “simple” music for the classical thread that had also been around in early life. Recently my 20-year-old daughter (classically trained in voice) turned me on to Symphonic Metal, and now I find myself an Epica fan, especially of “Phantom Agony,” their first CD. It is complex and interesting, ranging from simply beautiful to extremely powerful, with serious, skeptical lyrics that demand to be heard, or even studied. [Some of the very strongest choral passages are in Latin.] Phantom Agony was their first group work and far from perfect, but I listen to it again and again. These new songs are far more “produced” than the earlier work, which seemed far less pop-ish. Nevertheless, these songs are good, and they have interesting lyrics that are not immediately obvious (to a 54-yr-old engineer). Simone Simons is dead-on perfect in these songs, and she may be headed toward a great mainstream career as a solo artist. She deserves whatever she can get. However, I hope this isn’t a permanent departure for Epica and its nascent genre, and I hope Simone doesn’t abandon her mezzo-soprano background. It certainly doesn’t have to happen that way. In any case, I’m very glad to see Epica on iTunes, and I hope we’ll see Phantom Agony and the others here before long. By immediately buying these three tracks, I hope I have encouraged that possibility.
Don't Be Fooled!
Although these three songs do sound much more pop-oriented than Epica's past releases, this is not the case with 'The Divine Conspiracy'. Epica is still the same Gothic/Symphonic Metal band as ever. Only difference with the new album is... well... It's better. There's lots of orchestral elements, Latin passages, amazing vocals, howls, growls, and grunts, as well as crunching guitars. So don't be put off by the pop-ness of these songs. The new album is not 'pop' at all. I promise. (By the way... Personally, I'd buy the 'Divine Conspiracy' version of 'Never Enough', not this one... This version sounds like a radio mix, and the bass seems to be boosted a bit too far, causing some distortion of the song. But the other two songs are fine. 'Chasing the Dragon' and 'Safeguard to Paradise' are both beautiful piano ballads. If you liked 'Trois Vierges', or 'Feint', you'll love them.) Similar bands: Nightwish, Xandria, Evanescence, Delain, Krypteria, Luca Turilli's Dreamquest, Etc.
PLEASE MORE EPICA!!!!
I gave this album a 5 cause.....hello, its Epica. I just wish iTunes had more of there other music. This is one of the coolest band in existence. I cant wait to get my hand on "Cry for the moon" .....plus Simone is extremely hot!!!
