iTunes Review
Music and message fuse seamlessly on the Afters’ Never Going Back to OK. The boisterous Christian foursome scored a career-launching hit with 2005’s “Beautiful Love,” and their sophomore album is a worthy follow-up, matching substantial talent with youthful brashness and optimism. The tracks grab the listener immediately thanks to high-gloss production (courtesy of Dan Muckala) and exciting melodies. Tunes like “The Secret Parade,” “Tonight,” “We Are the Sound” and “Forty-Two” gush with geyser-like force, driven by Matt Fuqua’s quick-chopping guitar and Mark Dodd’s clattering drums. Lead singer Josh Havens matches the high-flying mood of his bandmates, infusing such blazing rockers as “Keeping Me Alive” and the title track with unbridled idealism. Piano-centered ballads such as “Ocean Wide” catch the band’s more reflective side. The Afters take some interesting detours, offering some gorgeous Beatles-esque vocal harmonies on “The Secret Parade” and exploring thoughtful Paul Simon-style poetics on “Summer Again.” While most of the songs examine God’s role in the lives of believers, the band gets playful with modern love in “Myspace Girl.” Buoyant in sound and positive in content, Never Going Back to OK finds the Afters clearly headed in the right direction.
Customer Reviews
Not a fluff review. These guys are actually that good.
I've seen many reviews blown up by fans who like anything. I think we've all fallen victim to the overblown review and bought something we didn't really care for. Some people even rate the album before they listen to it. For the record, I actually bought this album and listened to it all the way through... ... ...twice. This is one where you should absolutely buy the entire album. If you need convincing try starting with these songs, Never Going Back to OK, Forty-Two, Myspace Girl, Keeping Me Alive, Tonight, Ocean Wide, and Falling into Place in that order. All have killer hooks great melodies, and moving vocals. The rest of the songs are very good as well. They are not to be skipped. If you don't like these songs then you might have a deeper problem. You may in fact have no taste in music whatsoever. These guys keep getting better. This is a solid Five star and four star song album. Plenty of great stuff for everyone. You need this. The Afters are far beyond OK
Their first album was a revolution in Christian music. It sounded different, it felt different and the songs were just better than most Christian bands. But the album had it's weaknesses. It was at times plodding and some of the songs tended to run together in my memory. This album, however, shows that this band will never be OK again...they're gonna be huge and deservedly so. The songs are great. The vocals are great. Muckula's production is right on. Great album. I never give 5 stars to anything, but this album gets it. But, then again, I am a fan.
"Never Going Back to OK" a motto?
When I heard The Afters first cd, I thought it was all right. In my head, I was like, "They are so a one hit wonder (Beautiful Love)." Once I took a crack at this album, though, I was proven wrong in every aspect of that last statement. This is how- The Secret Parade - A Beatle-esque way to start. Very Enjoyable. - 8/10 Never Going Back to OK - This title track doesnt dissapoint fans. - 9/10 Keeping Me Alive - Such a beautiful love rock ballad. My fave. - 10/10 Tonight - I love the bouncy beat at the beginning of the song. - 7/10 Ocean Wide - It is an interesting love song. - 6/10 Myspace Girl - Such cute lyrics, and a poppy beat make this song fun - 10/10 We Are the Sound - I love the meaning of the lyrics. The beat is techno - 8/10 Falling Into Place - Again, the love for God shows. I love the slowness. - 7/10 Beautiful Words - I was blown away. Another ballad that isnt the same. - 8/10 Forty-Two - The one dissapointment on this track. I just cant connect. - 4/10 Summer Again - Sad, but very good. The piano is excellent. - 9/10 One Moment Away - AMAZING!! I LOVE THE MEANING!! - 10/10 Beautiful Love (Acoustic) - This song was sort of acoustic at the beginning, so I dont think they did all that much different. Here it is, though - 5/10 So there it is. The Afters new cd Never Going Back to OK. The band did a great job keeping it's former fan base, and gaining new fans by the barrels. Above all, they have found their signature sound, and are not trying to wash in like everyone else. The album is a must buy, and at eight dollars, it is a bargain.
