iTunes Review

Is it possible to fall in love in a swarming pit? Taking Back Sunday’s wall of guitars, revealing lyrics and wailing choruses not only make it possible but inevitable. TBS create the kind of explosive, four-on-the-floor hard rock kissed with passionate (but not emo) pop that appeal to both hardened souls and sensitive blog types. New Again spreads the appeal even farther, documenting more of TBS’s awesome power with vocalist Adam Lazzara at his most candid. There are a few changes — the departure of guitarist Fred Mascherino and the addition of Matt Fazzi, a shot at three-part harmonies, a bass solo on “Carpathia” — but the energy is distinctly TBS: pure and primal. “Everything Must Go” appears to be the newest anthem to stack on the TBS woodpile. “Capital M-E” is a not-so-veiled shot at Mascherino (who famously revealed to Newsday the band was “more about cooking food than making music”). “Sink Into Me” is the big single with all upgrades firing on all cylinders. New Again breathe new life into a band ready for its second half.

I've always loved TBS, and I respect all of these guys as musicians. It's cool that they tried a bit of a new direction yet again, but in my opinion this was certainly not their best effort.

After giving the album a serious chance, it's still not matching up with me. After the sheer awesomeness of the past three albums, this one is an utter let down. Tell All Your Friends was of course spectacular, with one hell of a sophomore attempt as its successor in Where You Want To Be, and Louder Now coming in as an incredible new development.

Louder Now was amazing, being louder and a little more energized. I know it was different, and many people didn't quite get into it, but it really had all the elements of a great TBS work. Excellent lyrical efforts came from Adam, and an updated but still true-to-the-soul sound from the rest of the gang. The dual-vocal trademark was certainly still in effect, with Fred howling back in the perfect moment.

New Again was found lacking in comparison. It really didn't slash through, the lyrics were sub-par, and the dualing vocals were practically absent.

All but these 4 songs never really broke through: New Again, Sink Into Me, Swing, and Everything Must Go. These were all good tracks, in my opinion. Not the best ever, but the best on the album. Long Time Comin' also had potential (bonus track).

But maybe that's all just me. It's always best to decide for yourself. You'll never know the truth if you don't listen! Buy it!
