Album Review

The Spinners were on a roll; after years of neglect at the hands of Motown, their ship just kept coming in, and in, and in with Atlantic Records. New and Improved is an absolute classic, yet it gets less run than some of their other LPs. Everything from the romanticism of "Smile We Have Each Other," a real tearjerker, to the self-assured, driven "I've Got to Make It on My Own" is on board, and it all works. "Sadie," a song about the death of a mother, became a signature song for the Spinners; it was revived in the '90s by R. Kelly, who introduced it to new fans, many of whom thought he created the touching tribute. Dionne Warwick struts her soul on "Then Came You," accompanied by Bobby Smith; it's a mover from the first note. A strong effort from Thom Bell and the Spinners.

Customer Reviews

One of their best and often overlooked.....

This is one of my favorite Spinners albums. I owned it on vinyl and nearly wore the grooves off of it and I am so excited to see it offered here! Pay special attention to the songs not offered on any of the anthologies such as "There's No One Like You", "Sitting On Top of the World" and the wonderful "Smile, We Have Each Other". Buy this one, it's excellent!

One of the greatest albums of the 70's

The Spinners were truly one of the most dynamic bands of their decade, this album as well as many others like " Mighty Love" were classics. I recomend this very highly!

Outstanding

I must have been in 5th or 6th grade when this was first released in '74. My cousin brought it to the house one night, and even back then it was a hit with me. To this day it is in my top ten complilations of all time. You have those albums/CDs that you like 3 or 4 songs on it and you skip over or don't care for the rest...this is NOT one of them. This one of those albums/CDs from top to bottom is a listener....ALL nice. I reminise every time I listen to it :)

Biography

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s

The Spinners were the greatest soul group of the early '70s, creating a body of work that defined the lush, seductive sound of Philly soul. Ironically, the band's roots lay in Detroit, where they formed as a doo wop group during the late '50s. Throughout the '60s, the Spinners tried to land a hit by adapting to the shifting fashions of R&B and pop. By the mid-'60s, they had signed with Motown Records, but the label never gave the group much consideration. "It's a Shame" became a hit in 1970,...
