This is so COOL. It's like Charlie Brown Christmas with NOLA jazz chops. Gotta love it!

So Sad Christmas is over...

...and now I have to wait till the day after Thanksgiving to play this album again. Can anyone make a piano sing for joy the way Ellis Marsalis can? Listen to the warm plash of bright colors in "God Rest Ye." And yet there's always a melancholic touch of reminiscence in Marsalis' arrangements -- of Christmases past, and of jazz greats from the past. You'll hear Marsalis pay homage to Vince Guaraldi while making Tannenbaum and Greensleeves and even "Christmas Time is Here" entirely his own creations.

If you want to extend the wonderful Christmas buzz this album is sure to give you, if only by a few more songs, go at look at the 1990 compilation, "Jazzy Wonderland," where you'll find two Alfred Burt songs played by members of the Marsalis family: Branford does an aching version of "Some Children See Him"; yet, even better, download Ellis Marsalis playing "This is Christmas" (which iTunes only attributes to "Various Artists"). That's Jason Marsalis on drums (who must be 12 years old at the time they recorded it--and whose genius can barely be contained). To me, Ellis' version of this song is the apotheosis of Christmas joy and nostalgia.

Would it be too much to ask the Marsalis family to get together and record the entire collection of Alfred Burt xmas carols? What an album that would be!

Christmas Americana

This is Christmas the way it should be. Out w/ old / stale -- in w/ new / refreshed. Christmas N'Orlans way, more felt than observed, with a downeasy swing, an "I don't care, it's Christmas" kind of attitude. Pass the fruit cake.

It is a bit ironic that Ellis Marsalis had to wait for sons Wynton and Branford to get famous before he was able to record on a regular basis, but Ellis has finally received his long-overdue recognition. The father of six sons (including Wynton, Branford, Delfeayo, and Jason), Ellis Marsalis' main importance to jazz may very well be as a jazz educator; his former pupils (in addition to his sons) include Terence Blanchard, Donald Harrison, Harry Connick, Jr., Nicholas Payton, and Kent and Marlon Jordan,...
