iTunes Review

Drawing on the Stones and a thousand AM radio gems for inspiration, the New York Dolls took raucous, chaotic din to previously unimagined levels. On their 1973 debut, the Dolls introduced themselves with the hoots, hollers, and howls of "Personality Crisis," and not all of those came from the throat of wise-guy frontman David Johansen. Lead guitarist Johnny Thunders wrung squawks and slurs from his instrument that could've made him a free-jazz celebrity if he'd wanted, while the rest of the band pounded like the proverbial Excedrin headache. The songs examined big-city life with hilarious, touching brio, making clear that the insistent and the poignant indeed had their places within the same tune. Still a great listen, it would later become an immense building block of the punk sound (and an eternal favorite of Morrissey's).

Good and rockin'

This is a really fun album. Despite the band's apparent excesses, there is a kick ass coherent flow from song to song. I never listened to much of the Doll's music until last week when I stumbled onto it, I guess I never got the whole "Doll" dress thing... Since then, I listened to a David Johansen NPR "Fresh Air" segment in which Terry Gross asked Johansen what the drag thing was about. He replied to the effect that "everyone is always in drag..." and something about people always are making statements with what they wear. This album has so much more to it than most of the subsequent punk bands achieved in their music. Sure, The Ramones were great, well because in part almost any of us could have been The Ramones. But few of us could have pulled off the Dolls' act. Throughout "The New York Dolls" you can hear numerous early strains that other bands would build entire careers on. Highly recommended if you like it loud and more than a little depraved.

They will never be copied and influeced too many too late...

OK, these guys were my best friends for quite a while and I toured all over New York with them when I was in the Miami,s. They WERE the history of this country after Viet Nam. Keep in mind that Rod Steward, Stones, Zep the Who Etc ruled the air waves and you can get an idea of just how ahead of their time these New York guys were. Just ask Kiss, Aerosmith, and every and all Punk band who ever was. This album was one of the best rock mixes of its day and captures the enery of this magnificent band. If you were lucky enought to had seen the band live you know that they were, at that point in time, the best band in the world and EVERY one who saw them new it. Johny was one of the greatest guitar players of all time followed by Sylvain and the best thing about them is they had the "We are all one big family thing" that the Dead had.No they were no Clapton or Page but their sound was one and only not a white guys steeling a black mans licks. As many groups of their time and even now, they became victims of hard drugs. I could write many books about these times. The Dolls were my brothers and I will always feel their energy, but even more I will always feel their Love. Their music will stand tall for the ages. 100 years from now some B move will most definatly have one of their post modern songs on it...See ya by George Day

If you don't like this album...

...you're just a square-assed jim-jim who never had any fun in their life anyhow. 5 stars? try a sky-full of them

Biography

Formed: 1971 in New York, NY

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '00s, '10s

The New York Dolls created punk rock before there was a term for it. Building on the Rolling Stones' dirty rock & roll, Mick Jagger's androgyny, girl group pop, the Stooges' anarchic noise, and the glam rock of David Bowie and T. Rex, the New York Dolls created a new form of hard rock that presaged both punk rock and heavy metal. Their drug-fueled, shambolic performances influenced a generation of musicians in New York and London, who all went on to form...
