Album Review
Three of the four lengthy performances on Newport '63 are taken from one of the John Coltrane Quartet's greatest performances: the 1963 Newport Jazz Festival. With pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Roy Haynes (filling in for an absent Elvin Jones), Coltrane performs what is arguably his greatest version of "My Favorite Things" along with memorable renditions of "Impressions" and "I Want to Talk About You." Two of those selections originally appeared on the LP Selflessness while "Impressions" was included in a later collection. This set is rounded out by "Chasin' Another Trane," the only recording from 'Trane's famous November 1961 engagement at the Village Vanguard that had Roy Haynes sitting in for Elvin Jones; altoist Eric Dolphy is also heard from on that heated selection.
Customer Reviews
One of my favorite things.
This album is what everyone else wishes they could hear from a Coltrane record. Roy Haynes makes an excellent fill-in for Elvin Jones on the drums. All the tunes have that Haynes Touch that is so common amongst his records: layers of notes and the breaking up the time that to the untrained ear sound like overplaying, but to the true jazz musician, he communicates with clairty, simplicity, and in good taste. Coltrane's playing is in full effect, as you can almost put words to what he's saying. The sheer emotion and enthusiasm jumps off this record and into your ear on the first note. A magnum opus from one of the premier saxophonists in the history of jazz.
jazz foresight
The prescient release of this recording two years before its performance is truly a coup for the label.
Newport '63
One of the greatest live performances in the history of jazz!!!!! "My Favorite Things" becomes a classic of a classic. Coltrane is one of the few musicians in the world capable of such a feat!
