iTunes Review

For his second full length album, after a series of EPs, Swedish troubadour Jens Lekman turns in an ambitiously orchestrated, lushly arranged pop gem. Recalling the cinematic melodrama of Lee Hazlewood, Scottt Walker, Curtis Mayfield and others from that late-‘60s-early ’70 era, Lekman adds his own self-conscious cuteness. “And I Remember Every Kiss,” “The Opposite of Hallejuah,” “I’m Leaving You Because I Don’t Love You” and “Friday Night at the Drive-In Bingo” tell tales that are achingly resonant matters of the heart that Lekman can’t help but deliver with a knowing wink. All of which could fall into a smarmy self-congratulation, except Lekman fires up the timpani, horns, strings, keyboards and guitars until the swelling mass bursts into a catharsis of its own. Lekman’s literary ambitions turn his lyrics into short stories, diary entries and psychological self-study, but he never loses the thrill of the nightclub. There’s romance in these grooves, even when the stories tend toward the lonely and awkward. Sometimes the humor of the situation turns out to be the most revealing truth.

Jens is ready for the bigtime

Lovely record. (Okay for those that aren't familiar here's the quick lowdown: Think SMerritt and Sufjan (eh?) does Bacharach/David with touches of disco and kitsch: they only properly enhance). Mr. Lekman is becoming a proper and formidable songwriter, this album takes some big leaps from his first in both writing and production. It's pretty much hit after hit after hit... the hooks keep coming. I would prefer "Drive-In Bingo" to be replaced by Maple Leaves (a brilliant single), but that's me. This guy is cute, gives good interview, is currently moving out of Sweden (so he says), and has a blockbuster... next stop is stardom... at least on an indie level. Maybe he can take it higher. Thank you, Jens see you on the 27th.

Just enjoyable

I don't normally write reviews for albums, but this one just surprised me so much and is such a little gem that I had to. I find myself humming the tunes, musing on the lyrical turns, smiling at the creativity, and finally marveling at the overall quality and cohesiveness of the album as a whole. It just makes me happy.

Yes!

You're right, it IS you.
