Album Review

This is one of those albums that is kind of hard to review simply because there's not much you can say about it. DJ John Kelley is a well-established figure on the West Coast breaks scene, and what he serves up here with his first artist album is a solid 46 minutes of pure funk pleasure, all of it instrumental and all of it written by Kelley in collaboration with a variety of friends and colleagues, mainly Brian Saitzyk and Brian Golub. Kelley knows how to mix up the flavors and textures without sacrificing his groove, and he also knows when it's time to let a fleet-fingered turntablist come in and spice things up, which Spider does brilliantly on both "Dye Sky Drive" and the heavyweight "Funkasaurus." There's also a nice cameo by rapper Dynamite Jive on "Eighty Eight." Those who don't have a natural affection for breakbeats may find things getting a bit tired by the end, but they're probably off dancing somewhere else anyway. Highly recommended.

Solid breaks from top to botton

I had heard some of John Kelly's stuff from the underground and when I ran across this full length release at a brick and mortar, I had to have it. I have since downloaded songs 13 and 14 to complete the JK experience. If a full on Crystal Method fan's recommendation doesn't do it for you, consider that TCM gave their stamp of approval to this fantastic disc. If you ever find yourself in Tokyo, listen to "Chopstix" while walking around the city or while riding the Japan Rail trains through the city. Great soundtrack to your trip.

Beat Genius

Being a tough customer in the beat dept. I must say that John Kelley lives up to his Moontribe Legend status on this one. He keeps the grooves coming as with his mix CD's and doesn't go in for alot of Progressive, handwaving, eurocrap. The subtlety of a craftsman can be heard throughout. He's doing his thing and it's sure to move a crowd and kick up some dust on the desert dancefloor.

Awesome!!!

John Kelley is a talented artist. His work is really energetic, youthful, and can get the blood moving.
