iTunes Review
This New England folksinger learned to accept the comforts of fellow folk musicians on his previous few releases but he isn’t about to sacrifice his homespun tales that still come heated courtesy of the kitchen wood stove. The added snarl of electric guitar on the title track practically throws Morrissey into the modern “rock” age and makes his idiosyncratic croak of a voice sound like the blue-collar Lou Reed of the graveyard shift. It’s a welcome tonal shift in a career that’s depended on a stillness that’s impossible to nail down. The New England he sings about is very real, but often sounds lost in time during an age where the world is becoming increasingly connected through satellite TV. But it’s a bluesy electric guitar that shades the shuffle of “Sandy,” a restrained picking that underlines the jocular “Cold, Cold Night” and it’s a hushed ensemble that collects for the wintry huddles of “Birches.” “Letter From Heaven” jovially collects all the dead musicians into one playful jam. Despite his loner streak, Morrissey plays well with others.

I'm Going To Miss You, Bill
Apparently lost in the news of Amy Winehouse's death was the incredibly sad news that Bill Morrissey has passed away as well. This is his finest album, and that's saying a lot. Birches is one of the most beautiful, saddest songs I have ever heard. Love Arrives, sung with David Johansen, is the opposite, a joyous, swinging rockabilly song that will have you up on your feet in an instant. And every other song on this album will touch you in one way or another, be it to make you think, laugh or cry. Bill, you will be missed more than words can say.
Few True Peers
There have been few contemporary songwriters who have- truly, really, no kidding or hyperbole-been able to turn a phrase and combine it with just the right note to evoke whatever emotion s/he wants you to feel as Bill Morrissey was. Everyone loves to compare every singer-songwriter who has a less than traditionally melodic voice and who can turn a phrase with Bob Dylan. Well, I've been a bona find Dylan fan for as long as I can remember (grew up partly in "the Village & have a much older brother. One of his tunes is my ring tone) but I can say that Bill Morrissey's songs "nail me to the wall" more often than almost anyone else's. Although ALL of his albums have incredible songs to offer, THIS ONE is truly amazing and is most deserving of your purchase. You will not be disappointed. Oh, and he is a LOT like Dylan ;-)!
