Very polished album

Diehard fans may be nonplussed by the continuing evolution of their sound, but I think Sirenia is headed in a good direction. The hardcore, black-tshirt-clad morose ones will just have to learn to live with the fact that most listeners don't care for the plodding rythms and croaking male vocals of a lot of gothic metal, and the band appears to feel the same way. Despite a rather transparent and no doubt studio mandated stab at a pop dance hit on this album (somebody slap the producer, please), the rest of the LP retains the strengths of earlier releases and builds on them with some quality production values. I liked it, and I think a lot of other people will, too. The angst-ridden few who are disappointed in the continuing maturation of Sirenia's sound will just have to find another way to wallow in gloom and despair.

A band evolves

I've noticed that the other reviews are not at all complimentary to Sirenia and their new album: Nine Destinies and a Downfall. I am here to tell you that this album is not a bad album. It is actually a very good one. Bands evolve. Their music will never stay the same, but the message and spirit behind them will. This is the case with Sirenia and Nine Destinies and a Downfall. I will confirm with the others that this album sounds very different than their previous two releases. The female vocalist is now front and center. Male vocals are only present on a few tracks, and the music is not as heavy as their prior works. I for one like Sirenia, and this new album. If a band makes all their albums sound the same, won't they start to get boring? Think about that, and listen to the samples before you decide to purchase.

Pleasantly surprised!

This album is a drastic departure from the previous Sirenia releases, with new lead siren Monika Pedersen's vocals front and center with very little grunting and groaning thrown in from the male members. Choir elements are still present. Traditionalist Sirenia fans might be disappointed, but I find the album to be a pleasant departure from the past, thanks to the dearth of death vocals on this album.

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

Somehow, leading Norway's Tristania to the top of the goth metal heap wasn't enough for vocalist/guitarist Morten Veland, who unilaterally seceded from the union in the year 2000 to found a brand-spanking-new though similar-sounding band named Sirenia. Picking up pretty much where he'd left off stylistically, Veland hand-picked compatriots Kristian Gundersen (clean vocals, guitar), Hans Henrik Varland (keyboards), and French singer Fabienne Gondamin to quickly perform on the following year's At Sixes...
