Great Job!
First to write a review! This album is without question ahead of itself with where Minneapolis Hip Hop is venturing. I've heard bits and pieces of the whole album and some full songs from their myspace page, but from what I gather, this album is very well written and orchestrated. I know these guys personally and I can tell you they're all real talented musicians and not only that, their rapport as a band is fantastic which shows through and through not just live but on the album as well. Buying the whole album saturday at the CD release show and I can't wait to put on the headphones and walk around the city listening to it. Kudos on the new record No Bird! See you at the trip rock!
Inventive Hip-Hop
It's hard to classify the sound of No Bird Sing. The alternative mix of music reminds one of cuts from Death Cab for Cutie, until you hear Joe Horton's deep delivery crash amongst the waves from the guitar. This is a new breed of animal, and certainly the direction that Minneapolis hip-hop could be headed. Horton's emotion hovers above all other aspects of the album, making the last charge on fan favorite "Devil Trombones" a haunting trip that drags the listener back for more. "Sparrows", with an appearance from the versatile Kristoff Krane, is another gem on the album, and songs like "Legal Blood Money" and "Chopper" come off as laid-back Rage Against the Machine. The guitar work from Robert Mulrennan echoes majestically over the steady beats produced by drummer Graham O'Brien, and the intermittent instrumental breaks are great pieces of work. The only knock on No Bird Sing is that their sound remains stagnant throughout most of the album, but whether this negates from the overall effect is up to the listener. It is nearly impossible to find another group quite like No Bird Sing, and a new record is greatly anticipated.
