Album Review

No Compromise marks the 20th anniversary of this pioneering Christian reggae band, and the group has aged well. Led by pastor Mark Mohr, Christafari continues to blend fully credible roots and dancehall reggae with an unapologetically evangelical Christian message, and that blend has never sounded better than it does on these 15 tracks. Nearly every one of them features a guest appearance by a similarly inclined singer or deejay, most of them relatively obscure (Solomon Jabby, Dominic Balli) but a few of them — notably the great dancehall chatter Papa San — are fairly well-known. One mark of Christafari's maturity is the band's ability to switch styles without sounding at all dilettante-ish — they sound as comfortable in a bouncy soca mode on "Hands Up" as they do recapitulating a vintage roots rhythm on "Try Jah Love," or riding the more modern grooves of "Compromise/Slippery Slope" and the anti-abortion anthem "Protesters." There are a few slightly awkward moments, such as the somewhat overwrought vocals on "Move in You Reprise" and the gospel-inflected and frankly kind of soft-in-the-middle "Messiah." But overall, Christafari is not only the best gospel-reggae band currently working, but is also one of the best reggae bands out there, period, as this album proves again.

Christafari just keeps getting better!

Birthed in 1989 out of a love for the Lord and a passion for winning the lost through reggae music, Christafari has released 10 albums, performed in 46 states, 50 countries, before 2 Olympic Games and even played for the President of the United States! It's hard to believe that 20 years into their ministry these gospel reggae pioneers would have their best-year-ever with more shows, better sales and more souls coming to Christ than ever before!

In early 2009, this massive 10-piece ensemble took a break from their hectic touring schedule to create a landmark album that celebrates their 20 years in the ministry. Rather than resting on their laurels, they wrote a string of new hits, that when woven together create a musical tapestry that is sure to withstand the test of time.

The 15 anthems that grace this revolutionary project are a modern take on Christafari's classic signature sound (all live instruments including wailing guitars, rich harmonies and a brazen horn section). The vast majority of the songs are roots and culture with elements of dancehall, hip-hop, soca with touches of rock. One thing that sets this album apart from the rest is the sheer number of guest appearances (over 30 artists) including some of the top names in the gospel reggae, hip hop and worship. Everyone wants to be a part of this musical milestone!

At the end of every Christafari show, bandleader Pastor Mark Mohr gives an invitation and thousands come to know the Lord through this powerful ministry each year. Inspired by gospel music pioneer Keith Green, this album has an even stronger evangelical tilt than previous offerings with songs like "Whosoever," and "Try Jah Love." The project also has a strong anti-drug message with tracks like "Most High" and "Pure Meditations." "Gwaan Natty" reveals Christafari's passion for reaching Rastafarians, while "The Protesters" unites all gospel reggae artists against abortion in an effort to stop the "Silent Holocaust." More intimate songs like "Taking in the Son" and "Messiah" lead the listener into a time of worship.

Biography

Genre: Reggae

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Christafari is the first Christian reggae band. Upon seeing the group's name and the fact that founder Mark "Tansoback" Mohr sports long dreads, one might deduce that the bandmembers promote a combination of Rastafarianism and Christianity, but the band's moniker actually comes from the Latin derivation...
