Album Review

Rattus Norvegicus, the Stranglers' first album (and first of two in 1977), was hardly a punk rock classic, but it outsold every other punk album and remains a pretty good chunk of art-punk. On the other hand, No More Heroes, recorded three months later and released in September 1977, is faster, nastier, and better. At this point the Stranglers were on top of their game, and the ferocity and anger that suffuses this record would never be repeated. Hugh Cornwell's testosterone level is very high, but it's still an enjoyable bit of noise that holds up better than anyone would have guessed at the time.

The Second of Three Brilliant Early Albums

Unrelenting from their first brilliant album, Rattus Norvegicus, 'No More Heroes' is another classic of the early 'New Wave'. And like its predecessor, the songs are hard, crass, artful, creative and crude. Included is one of the most obscene songs ever recorded, 'Bring On The Nubiles'. At the time of this album's release I was working at a college radio station. The station's music director was so freaked by this song, so afraid someone would play it on the air, that he SCRATCHED IT UP on the vinyl record with a pen so as to make it unplayable. He then attempted to hide the album from the DJs. I found it again and made sure everyone knew the album was a piece of genius. It is full of great melodies, thug humor, witty commentary and maniacal fun. I consider it a bookend with the first album, the second of a kind. PLUS this version is 'extended' in that it contains the separate single '5 Minutes' and its b-side 'Rok It To The Moon'. You'll be banging many of these great tunes in your head well after listening to the album. NOTE: NOT for pre-teens, or even impressionable teens. Dire obscenity mixed with great invention.

"Hear the lullaby? Rest in peace, baby."

Two thumbs up.

The Stranglers formed as the Guildford Stranglers in the southern England village of Chiddingfold (near Guildford) in 1974, plowing a heavily Doors-influenced furrow through the local pub rock scene — such as it was. Of the four founding members, only Hugh Cornwell had any kind of recognizable historical pedigree, having played alongside Richard Thompson in the schoolboy band Emil & the Detectives. According to Thompson, their repertoire stretched from "Smokestack Lightning" and...
