Album Review

Memphis sextet Snowglobe provide a concentrated dose of their diverse mixture of rock and neo-psychedelia on this 26-minute, seven-song EP, which is actually, in a sense, shorter than it seems since the fifth track, "Comforted [Full Version]," and the seventh, "Prelude," are largely instrumental musical collages. Still, the band manages to give showcases to three of its songwriters, particularly Brad Postlethwaite, who introduces the theme of woman trouble on the leadoff track, "Nothing I Can Do" ("There's nothin' I can do/That's good enough for you"), in which the buoyant music belies the unhappy lyrics. Tim Regan continues the theme in his composition "Seems Like," and Jeff Hulett becomes a bit more abstract on "Teenage Queen," meanwhile evoking the classic country-rock sound of Neil Young's Harvest. Postlethwaite also suggests Young, if the electric Young of Crazy Horse, on "Get It On." These are strong compositions, forcefully played, and while Snowglobe can't resist their tendency toward musical elaboration, especially on the collage numbers, this is a more focused effort from them that bodes well for future full-lengths.
