iTunes Review
As they’ve done before with Building Nothing Out of Something and Everywhere and His Nasty Parlor Tricks, No One’s First, and You’re Next is a collection of previously issued material. Gathering eight B-sides and sundry odds and ends from the past two releases (Good News for People Who Love Bad News and We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank) this retrospective contains some gems that no Modest Mouse fan should be without. Though the songs were recorded over the span of several years, the set doesn’t sound disjointed. Instead, it offers a fascinating look at the band’s range and evolution as well as further proof of Isaac Brock’s restless songwriting brilliance. There’s the quirky pop of “Satellite Skin” and the surreal, banjo-driven “King Rat,” the woozy sing-along “Perpetual Motion Machine” from the Good News sessions with horns by the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and the melodic “I’ve Got it All (Most).” The album only runs about 33 minutes yet still feels substantial.
Customer Reviews
Good group, decent album.
Modest Mouse is not, and has never been my favorite alternative group, but they have some good stuff, and this album does a decent job showing their talent in the music industry, they are worth the listen and the purchase. I'm diggin the $0.99 price back!!! Give me a yes if you dig! haha :D
Listen to early Mouse
This album is the epitome of mediocrity, especially compared to early Modest Mouse. Back in the day this group was cranking out aggressive music and meanigful lyrics that featured some pretty sick, uniquely twangy guitar. The band has evolved overtime into what it is now an overly poppy sounding, depressingly standard alternative band. The band's crossover to a major record label dragged them from the underground indie-rock scene of the 90s to Alternative Wasteland. Modest Mouse has officially left behind the sound which set them apart and from which they derived all of their appeal. I hope everyone who reads this will go listen to The Lonesome Crowded West and marvel at what once was musical brilliance.
Took Long Enough.... Yet Amazing
Ive been waiting for this EP since the day it was announced with agonizing patience. As they slowly released the singles with the b sides i got more and more hyped. The first single, satellite skin with b side guilty cocker spaniels, was a good start and little taste of what was to come. The next single, autumn beds with the whale song, blew me away, I was amazed that a song as superbly crafted as the whale song could be left out of "We were dead" and then is a b side to a great, but sub par song compared to the whale song. The last single, perpetual motion machine and history sticks to your feet, was the bands third outing with the dirty dozen brass band, seen on songs like the horn intro and this devil's workday. Perpetual motion machine was probably the weakest of the three singles with no stellar tracks. However, the final two songs, king rat and ive got it all(most) happen to be some of the best modest mouse songs to date. Ive got it all(most) was a b side on a vinyl realeased around the time "Good News" came out paired with float on, you could also get it if you got the special edition of "Good News." But King Rat is a relatively unknown song aside from the news that the late Heath Ledger directed a music video for it. However, it is one of the strongest tracks on the whole EP with the wonderful banjo and deep thoughtful lyrics. This EP is one for the ages, it may have a few sub par tracks, however it also has some of the greatest modest mouse songs to date. Out of my collection of 190 songs by modest mouse i can honestly say this is one of the best collection of songs there is by this amazing band
