iTunes Review

Florida’s Jacuzzi Boys make great party music, but not the kind suited to beach balls and margaritas. They’re more suited to dingy basements and strobe lights, churning out a delicious blend of psych and garage rock: stomping percussion, time-warped guitars, and reverb wrapped vocals with the perfect balance of snotty whine and boyish naiveté. They have a slightly cleaner sound than, say, the Black Lips or Thee Oh Sees, and seem prime for some level of “breakthrough” soon (à la the Hives back in 2001).  This is the young trio’s full length debut after a handful of 7” singles, and there’s not a dud among the dozen tracks: vapors of the Chocolate Watch Band and 13th Floor Elevators waft through tracks like “Throwing Stones” and “I Saw It All,” while the tune “Dock” belies a late-‘70s punk influence and “Smells Dead” beats with a camouflaged pop heart. The glinting, see-sawing jangle of “Island Ave” and “Burn It Down” are impossible to sit still to, and opener “Blow Out Your Lights” should come with a safety warning: Multiple listens may result in unexpected incendiary combustion!  Hey, some of us live for that.

Biography

Formed: Miami, FL

Genre: Dance

Years Active: '10s

Although they might sound like they could've appeared on the original Nuggets compilation, the Jacuzzi Boys are most definitely a product of the 21st century; Gabriel Alcala (guitar) and Diego Monasteri (drums) teamed up to form the Jacuzzi Boys in Miami, Florida in 2007. Bassist Danny Gonzales was brought on board...
