iTunes Review

The demarcation lines between jazz and gospel become meaningless on Kim Burrell’s No Ways Tired. This exemplary vocalist has gained increased exposure through her collaborations with such secular music greats as R. Kelly, George Clinton, and Harry Connick, Jr. Her burnished, mellow style — sometimes concealing its power in breathy phrasing — conveys a sincerity that revivifies even familiar gospel numbers. Her readings of “What a Friend We Have In Jesus” and “I Surrender All” seem both fervent and dreamy. Conversely, she discovers God smiling at the center of the Gershwins’ tender standard “Someone to Watch Over Me.” Augmenting the cover material are several Burrell originals, including the prayerful “Jesus” and the swaying “Yes to Your Will.” Tracks like “Happy” and the title tune express the unaffected joy pervading the album overall. As both testimony and entertainment, No Ways Tired is positively energizing.

**** Simply Burrell ****

Kim Burrell executes each song (some new and some old) with a fresh twist, applying her own signature style. I am a fan, but an honest one-If your looking for a live experience to burst out of the CD, then expect something a bit different but just as GREAT. It's a studio CD, as you can probably tell by the samples heard above or by descriptions you've read- HOWEVER- This album is definitely for those who enjoy the genius of Kim Burrell's music and for those in love with her voice. It's worth the listen and it's a positive, encouraging album. A wonderful job done, and looking for more in the not too distant future.

CONSISTENT & ACCESSIBLE

I, like many of you, have been a fan of Kim Burrell since I first heard her back in 1996. Her Jazz infused approach to Gospel was for me, both innovative and intriguing. My complaints, if any, were that her music was inaccessible to the common singer. The modal riffs and complex arr., could only be performed by Kim herself, or someone with enough skill to mimmic her. NO WAYS TIRED is a delightful refrain from traditional Kim. Vocally, the style is more laid back, yet it is no less Kim Burrell. She seems to focus more on the song and its text, and less on her own voice. Both the voice and the songs remain in tact. These old gems are familiar, yet very new. This CD spans the gammit of emotions inherent to Gospel music, but makes no comprimise in its ministry. The best thing for me is that the album is very consistent. It flows from track to track and remains listenable and very enjoyable. Much success trying to pick a favorite song from this CD. It has not been so easy for me.

No Way's Tired Of Hearing This Album

Kim's music hath charms to soothe a savage breast, To soften rocks, bend a knotted oak, and SAVE SOUL's.

Houston, Texas-based singer and pianist Kim Burrell calls what she does "jazz gospel," and her ability to write a good portion of the material she records and performs makes her a rarity in the gospel field. To say she started performing early would be an understatement, since she took her first vocal solo with a church choir when she was only one year old. The daughter of a pastor and an evangelist singer, Burrell began her professional career with Rev. James Cleveland's Gospel Music Workshop Choir,...
