iTunes Review

For album number two, New England folksinger Bill Morrissey adds a clarinet for the creaking “It’s Dangerous Out There” and continues to croak his songs with an empathy that understands the need for work even if he can’t quite find the words to admit he enjoys it. So “Night Shift” is all romance for a time and place he ponders nostalgically but would never willfully return. “Married Man” is a wry look at the pleasures and the clichés that come when a wanderer settles down. Only Morrissey can make the cold, quiet venture of “Ice Fishing” sound so joyous and sunny. No coincidence that he adds greater accompaniment to hide the solitary streak that runs through tunes like “Pantherville,” “He Drinks Alone” or “Snow Outside the Mill.” Much of Morrissey’s work has an autumnal flow, but with North he heads into the frigid winter cold with the same terse way with a story that gives you a second for your eyes to well up before being shuffled off to the next casualty.

Early album, but still very fine work

This is one of Morrissey's early albums, but I still think it's one of his best. The small portraits and landscapes, like snapshots found in an album, convey a larger world through a few simple details. The writing is sure. The playing is straightforward and strong. The voice ... well, it's Bill: it matches the words and music.

North

This is Bill's second album and one of his best. This year we lost him to heart failure and in my opinion, we lost one of America's greatest songwriters. These days, we love to group music into genres, some of which I've never even heard of. This man was a true American poet, much like Paul Simon was in the seventies. His incredible talent for telling stories and creating emotional scenes transcended genres. Yes, he is a folk musician. If it were the 60's or 70's, he'd be considered "acoustic", like CSN, Jim Croce, Harry Chapin, etc. If your not familiar with Bill's work, I'd start out with the album "Standing Eight". Secondly, I listen to "Inside".
This is number 3 on my Morrissey list. When I found out that Bill died this year, I'd felt like I lost my best friend. His music helped me through hard times and he was always there when I needed him. Goodbye Bill. Will will miss you.

Biography

Born: November 25, 1951 in Hartford, CT

Genre: Singer/Songwriter

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

Beginning in the mid-'80s, Bill Morrissey released a series of albums of original songs that startled and delighted the following he built up touring around the Northeast. By his second LP, North, he'd been picked up by the Philo division of Rounder Records. Morrissey sang in a surprisingly flexible, deep voice (somewhat reminiscent of Leon Redbone's croak, but more supple). His songs were full of humor and pathos, expressed in keenly observed details about small-town life, sometimes desperate, sometimes...
