Album Review
Something Corporate had the misfortune of being dubbed an emo band throughout their career, a classification that overlooked the group's pop/rock muscle and Andrew McMahon's strong songwriting. While Leaving Through the Back Window introduced McMahon as a younger generation's Ben Folds (albeit with more angst and less snarky humor), North saw the songwriter taking an introspective turn, shunning the drunk high school girls and classroom bullies of his previous album for thoughtful ruminations on love, celebrity, and the steady approach of adulthood. North's strongest rock songs — "Space," "Only Ashes," "Break Myself," and "The Runaway" — feature minor-key guitar riffs and anxious vocals, indicating that the band's sunny disposition also had a dark side, but the album's true highlights are the slower numbers. "As You Sleep" opens the disc with midtempo piano arpeggios, and the striking title track mixes sparse, atmospheric verses with a meteoric chorus. There's some filler here, of course — probably more than the band's debut, which only seemed to lose steam toward the end of its 14-song track list — but North still proved that Something Corporate had the maturity to move past the majority of their Warped Tour brethren. Unfortunately, rhythm guitarist William Tell quit during the album's supporting tour, and Something Corporate took an extended (perhaps permanent) break several months later. Andrew McMahon went on to form Jack's Mannequin, a band that sampled equally from Something Corporate's sunny, pop-based beginnings and the mature, often melancholic introspection of this sophomore effort.

Amazing For Most Bands, Just "Above Average" For SoCo
Coming off of their amazing first full length album "Leaving Through The Window", the guys of Something Corporate come out with an album that is, again, the best thing in music today. I, being the biggest fan of these guys bought the album the day it came out after listening to that first album multiple times a day until "North" hit stores. I will say that "Leaving Through The Window " kind of ruined this one for me by SoCo standards. This one, however, is still incredible and should not be just thrown away. Here are the songs.. 1. "As You Sleep" is a great way to open up the album. The piano is beautiful as well as Andrew's voice. 2. "Space", the single, is an amazing listen for a while but just gets boring. This is the most overrated song on the cd. 3. "Down" could possibly be the best thing Andrew has ever written. Absolutely beautiful. 4. "Only Ashes" is a rockin tune that is a great driving song and one that is amazig live. 5. "Me And The Moon" had to grow on me. A song of a wife that kills her husband. The darkest thing Andrew's ever written. His vocals are once again sensational. 6. "The Runaway" is another good one with great lyrics and an upbeat tempo. 7. "Ruthless" is possibly the best song on the album. Great lyrics, great vocals, just great everything. 8. "She Paints Me Blue" is very good. Not much to say. 9. "Break Myself" is another rockin tune. Very good. 10. "I Won't Make You" is the "You're Gone" of "North". Myy second or third favorite. I think that Andrew's vocals here are at their finest. 11. "21 And Invincible" is simply awesome. Great guitar jump all around song. A definite fan favorite, as well as mine. 12. "Miss America" is beautiful. Vocals and lyrics, as every other song are superb. Goes side by side with "I Won't Make You" as a top three choice for the album. My only complaint is that they could have ended it more climacticly but that does not hurt the overall feel. "North" for any other band is the best album a band can write. For SoCo however, "North" simply can be described "Not Leaving Through The Window". If you're a fan, you have to have it. If you're not a fan, you have to have it. This gets five stars because it is a wonderful cd, and if it wasnt for their previous release, this might be my favorite cd of all time
their stamp on time
i think this album will be remembered as their best, the work everyone comes back to again and again. the songwriting is still playful at times (like their previous work) and melancholy at others. it has hints of expressionism and melodrama best exemplified by their live favorite, "Konstantine." If piano rock is your thing, this is your album.
An Amazing Album
Every song on this album is great, but my favorites are Down, Only Ashes, Me and the Moon, Ruthless, and Break Myself. However, every song is good and Andrew McMahon's voice is amazing.
