Album Review

Saul Williams' Not in My Name EP is a protest record that comes with a number of variations and remixes of "The Pledge of Resistance," a caustic spoken word piece that both begins the disc and reflects the aim of Not in My Name, a proresistance, antiwar project led by artists. DJ Spooky, the executive producer here, provides three different backdrops for Williams' piece, while DJ Goo and Coldcut each provide one. Despite all the fittingly noisy production work done by those involved, Williams' pledge has the most impact when it's unadorned.

Sagittarius needs to turn off the O'Reilly Factor

When he says "these hoodlums", who exactly is he referring to, I wonder? Saul Williams is a well-regarded urban poet. Coldcut and DJ Spooky are world-famous DJs. None of the people on this album consider themselves, or are in any way, "gangsta," nor would any of them advocate the death of any innocent man, woman, or child in the streets of America or of Iraq. But Sagittarius heard "rap", and to him, "rap" means "violence." Or, did he hear "rap", and to him rap means "black? and therefore "violence?" I wonder.... Either way, phenomenal stuff from these guys, and a great example of Saul's empassioned and honest spoken word style.

great stuff

Great exhibition of Saul Williams talent on this album. And anyone who says that Saul Williams endorses, supports, engages in (etc.) "hoodlum" "violent" lifestyles is a fool who is making racist assumptions about a person they know nothing about, whose music they have never bothered to listen too.

Sag is otta control

I thought this was tight. I love Saul's poetry and the beats are tight too. Yall need to peep Sagitarius' reviews, is it just me or is there a bias there, maybe a little racism. Keep it real Sag! And when you get finished watching the your favorite Schwartzneggar shoot 'em up, then come back and talk to me about violence in rap.

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

DJs Jonathan More and Matt Black, aka Coldcut, rose to acclaim in the mid-'80s through production and remix work for a number of modern rock, hip-hop, and dance outfits, including Yaz, Lisa Stansfield, Junior Reid, Blondie, Eric B. & Rakim, and Queen Latifah. While that connection has pegged them as a product of the U.K. acid house and rave scenes, the pair's larger commitment has been to urban breakbeat styles such as hip-hop, ambient dub, and jungle; the three of which have constituted the...
