iTunes Review
The remastering of these Frank Sinatra gems gives them such a crisp and clear presence that you could turn up the volume and pretend to have stopped by an upscale supper club in the early 1960s to see him perform. Though many of Sinatra's staples are here in all their glory ("Luck Be A Lady," "Fly Me To The Moon," "My Way," etc.), it's the duets like "Somethin' Stupid" with daughter Nancy or his tipsy take on "The Girl From Ipanema" with Antonio Carlos Jobim that are worth their weight in Goldschläger. The smooth and smoky "Drinking Again" is so handsomely sullen that a young George Jones could have written it, but the rare 1984 recording of "Body And Soul" is the spiciest meatball here — not only does the remastering sound more intimate than all the rest, but the original takes were mixed over an arrangement recorded in 2007 by Torrie Zito and Frank Sinatra, Jr., and the end result comes off beautifully — truly a great way to commemorate the 10th anniversary of his passing.
Customer Reviews
Nothing But The Best is pretty much that.
First off, this is the first authorized Reprise album of Frank Sinatra material found here on iTunes. Reprise Era Sinatra was sorely needed on here to fill a gap that had formed on iTunes, which held practically no Reprise era material save for a few scatared songs that belonged to film albums and such. Here is prety much the best single disc introduction you can get to Sinatra in the Reprise era; over an hour long and hitting upon some of Sinatra's greatest work: period. You'll find Sinatra singing with Count Basie backing him or dueting with his daughter Nancy or with Antonio Carlos Jobim on guitar. There are the hits; the severely overplayed songs like "My Way" and "Strangers in the Night" (two songs which Sinatra grew to detest) to the iconic works like "Theme from New York, New York" and "Fly Me To The Moon" and even less known tracks like "Bewitched" off of Sinatra's strongest early Reprise era album, "The Concert Sinatra" or "Call Me Iresponsible", a song that should be more assosciated with Sinatra. Another rarit is a great take of the wonderful jazz standard "Body and Soul", recorded for the 1984 album "L.A. Is My Lady" but ultimatley dropped. Here it is now; albeit with a new arrangement by Torrie Zito and conducted by Frank Sinatra Jr. that overdubs the original arrangement. However, this new arrangement easily surpasses the original. A great performance, and a signal that a new age has appeared for Frank Sinatra. This CD is the first CD release to come from Frank Sinatra Enterprises along with Rhino/Reprise records. The recordings have been remasted beautifully and without tampering though you'll find a few treats on some old classics that will make you listen to them twice. This is the best he's ever sounded ever. Not even on vinyl or CD. He does standards and show tunes in the way that only he could: with truth, conviction and feeling. That's Sinatra. That's why you have to buy this. Sinatra
YESS!!!
23 songs regarded to be Frank Sinatra's best for 15 dollars, plus extras. How can you not love this deal. Definitely a must for the Sinatra fan.
Nothing But the Best, almost
One song that should be here but isn't: "Nice 'n' Easy", a Capitol recording from 1960 that got a digital remaster in 1999. But then there are others to consider: "Lady is a Tramp", "All the Way" and God knows how many other more elegant ballads that people might favor over the obnoxious "That's Life". It's still a good record to buy, but I suggest supplement it with these omissions, then strain out the flack and have a truly excellent compilation in the end.
