iTunes Review

This is where the fights break out. After four studio albums of steady progress and experimentation, Metallica opted to streamline their attack to something more readily accessible to the masses. Producer Bob Rock was brought aboard to sharpen their sound, which had grown admittedly muddled on their previous release ...And Justice For All, and he also seems to have tutored the group towards writing songs that get to the point. "Enter Sandman" is the obvious case-in-point. Its head-on, no-nonsense approach and fail-safe chorus ("Exit light, enter night") guaranteed the group the radio and MTV play that often eluded them in the past. If anything, however, it's the refined moments — the haunting ballad "Nothing Else Matters," the contemplative "The Unforgiven — that actually extend the band's reach and are the album's highlights. Ironically, it's the standard Metallica riffage of "Of Wolf and Man" and the defensive "Don't Tread On Me" that sound as if the group is in danger of boxing themselves into the corner. It's a testament to their strong identity that this would be a problem, one most groups would rehearse their entire lives to have.

Best Metallica Album

by MetalMania08

A lot of people say Master of Puppets is Metallica's best album, saying that it's their best work from their thrashy days, which is probably true. Metallica's first four albums are incredibley awesome, and I absolutley love them. However, The Black Album is their all around best work. It's not as fast and technical as before, but it is amazing. People think this is where the band sold out, but that is because some people want to be fans of the less popular, older albums, and are afraid of liking the more popular, radio friendly work. But it was inevitable that the album would be so successful simply because the songs were so good. Bands don't say, "okay, we need to get on mtv and make more money, so let's take an entire year to write and perfectly record incredible masterpieces of songs".

Metallica triumphs...commercially

I must say that this is a great record. I enjoy Metallica's older records just as much as I enjoy this release. It shows progression of uncharted musical commercialism that most artists dare not go. They are true pioneers in what they hold true to themselves as artists by evolving to encounter new and clear sound. I don't want to be bulls**tted by repetetive musical banter. AC/DC and Def Leppard have quite the problem in coming up with anything that sounds different from album to album. Talk about stuck in a rut, it's a wonder how these idiots keep making money-oh yeah, they have a simple minded following. Metallica is obviously not for the simple minded. This album is a classic work of these four men emerging from their adolescent stage and moving into a brand new territory of new "Metal Music" that most metal bands still fail to acheive because they are so driven to maintain an image.

Biography

Formed: 1981 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

Metallica was easily the best, most influential heavy metal band of the '80s. Responsible for bringing the genre back to Earth, the bandmates looked and talked like they were from the street, shunning the usual rockstar games of metal musicians during the early '80s. Metallica also expanded the limits...
