Album Review

Long-lived mainstream rock band Carbon Leaf offered few surprises on Nothing Rhymes with Woman. It's a set of dependably earnest tunes, ably paced by Barry Privett's confident and versatile vocals, projecting various shades of hope and regret without succumbing to breast-beating anthemic rock moves. That might be a nice way of saying that there's not much that stands out here musically or is worthy of singling out for uniqueness of vision. At least Carbon Leaf do what they do with high professionalism and integrity, and some variety, even if overall it's pretty average commercial guitar rock radio fare. But it's not a great sign when you have to struggle to pinpoint highlights or noteworthy features, though one of those is a return to the more Celtic slant on rock characteristic of their earlier albums on "Pink." The brooding, slightly swampy thump of "Another Man's Woman" is a welcome break into something a whole lot more sinister than their usual brand of roots rock with a warily uplifting outlook.

Listen

Indecision, drops of rain & lake of silver bells are the best tracks on this album... Took a few listens to really start to dig this disk... But worth the patience!

MUST GET

Too many great songs to list here. I like that this album has peppy songs, fun songs, slow songs, and always meaningful songs. Carbon Leaf really hits the spot with this album and all the lyrics are fantastic!! I love Carbon Leaf and this is probably my favorite album so far! It is worth every dollar.

Solid Carbon Leaf Album

Not as good pound for pound in my opinion as Indian Summer, but still a solid offering from Carbon Leaf. Favorites include Miss Hollywood, Another Man's Woman, and the best of all Lake of Silver Bells.

Carbon Leaf's brand of rootsy, Celtic-influenced rock originated in the same Richmond, VA, scene that nurtured Dave Matthews Band, Agents of Good Roots, and Pat McGee Band. Guitarist Terry Clark, vocalist Barry Privett, bassist Jordan Medas, guitarist Carter Gravatt, and drummer Scott Milstead built up a considerable following and were soon releasing albums through their own label. Meander appeared in 1996, with Shadows in the Banquet Hall and Ether-Electrified Porch Music following in quick succession....
