iTunes Review

While My Bloody Valentine served up a dense wall of aggressive sound, Ride took a less confrontational approach as it helped define the shoegazer movement. Nowhere is a shimmering whirl of sound, with harmonies and melodies that recall the psychedelic '60s while the guitar tones ramp up the electronics of the late '70s through to 1990, when this album was released. It's a work of subtle and overt genius. Drummer Laurence Colbert deserves special distinction, for it's his Keith Moon–like beats that add crazy excitement to the squalls of "Seagull" and the otherwise laidback groove of "Kaleidoscope." Mark Gardener and Andy Bell use their vocals to both follow the melodies and weave an aura. "In a Different Place" is simply beautiful. Alan Moulder's mix ensures the band's sonics find their best expression. The 11-track version of the album includes the band's Fall EP, while the 15-track version adds the Today Forever EP for even more trance-inducing richness. A bargain at any price.

Customer Reviews

Taste

It's a perfect song.

As is the rest of this album, for that matter.

Personal faves run as follows:
Taste
Vapour Trail
Dreams Burn Down (Loz's drums are absolutely SICK)
Polar Bear (the build up that shimmers through the opening minutes to the first sustained beats are chilling)
In A Different Place (a lovely change of pace)

Ride's story (like so many other wonderful bands from the UK over the past 30 years) never made it big in North America, and that's a darn shame for millions of people who love rock and roll. This album is a great starter, and if iTunes ever puts out the incredible EP debut, both Chelsea Girl and Drive Blind would be good starters as well.

Deserted Island Album

If I was to take 10 albums on a deserted island, this would be one of them. I've been listening to this for years and it never gets old.

Despite the Taxman riff, Seagull is one of the strongest opening tracks ever. It lets the listener know exactly what they're in for, namely swirling soaring atmospheric psych-rock. The lyrics on this album are also an interesting blend. The vocal harmonies make their morose musings seem downright uplifting. If shoegazer isn't your bag, don't bother, these guys are definitely guilty of navel-reflection. But the music is undeniably fantastic. Now if i-tunes wants more of my money they'll make the band's Smile EP available also. For now though, enjoy this.

Biography

Formed: 1988 in Oxford, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s

With their first records, Ride created a unique wall of sound that relied on massive, trembling distortion in the vein of My Bloody Valentine but with a simpler, more direct melodic approach. The shatteringly loud, droning neo-psychedelia the band performed was dubbed shoegazing by the British press because the bandmembers stared at the stage while they performed. Along with their initial influence, My Bloody Valentine, Ride stood apart from the shoegazing pack, primarily because of their keen sense...
