iTunes Review
Even pop fans used to surprises must’ve done a double take when Gorillaz’ “Feel Good Inc.” became an inescapable hit in 2005. Its blend of Damon Albarn’s detached vocal, Kinks-style bridge and fast-paced contribution from art-hop pioneers De La Soul suggested a restless film soundtrack, not a major airplay hit. Making even the multimedia outfit’s eclectic debut sound a bit shy about leaping genre barriers, Demon Days was nicely represented by the single. Blending futurism with a downbeat assessment of current life on Earth, its sonic swirl indeed brought to mind visuals beyond the accompanying cartoon characters who “make up” the “band.” “Every Planet We Reach is Dead” was fit for a striptease on a space station, while the Santa Esmeralda-like disco fusion of “Dare” brought to mind a horse-opera knockoff of Kill Bill. Albarn and co-founder Dan “The Automator” Nakamura proved that such gamesmanship would find many wide-open ears.

An Amazing Melting Pot of Styles
This group is crazy. They take every possible genre and throw it together to create an unusual and unique sound. For instance, the artists will rap while orchestrated music plays in the background, and then the whole sound will quickly dissolve into something reminiscent of 80's dance music. This sounds bizarre, but somehow it works so well that I can't pull away from this album. I've entered a Gorillaz craze and suddenly I want every song they've ever produced. Another great thing this album does is it flows. By that, I mean that the songs string together, and it's only fully appreciated when the whole album is played in one sitting. This is much like Dark Side of the Moon, where the songs complement each other and build to an awesome conclusion. Out of all the newest hits, I feel that this one has the most right to popularity; the music and atmosphere are incredibly sophisticated and unique.
In a Summer of Music, Demon Days Stands Out
When this summer came around I was excited to see the line up of artists releasing music; Dave Matthews Band, Coldplay, Foo Fighters, and several others. However, most albums were only good or subpar. Demon Days by Gorillaz however was a knock out of the park.
The album fetured an entertaining mix of sounds, tempos, and beats that include booty-shaking dance, goth-like carelessness, choir laided choruses, and a song I could only describe as "groove."
Opening with a track of sound effects, you are put into the mood of what the album is about, creepyness, oddities, but you want to hear more. Tracks 2-4 have the goth feel I mentioned creating a similar beat that you get used to, but then Dirty Harry comes along and suddenly kids singing and a fast rap changes the tone. Harry and Feel Good Inc. get the dance beats started then the CD falls into a calm groove from El Mañana to November has Come. All Alone, White Light, and Dare turn the dance back on. The tracks become a bit repetitive (especially White Light) but they are each different enough to keep your attention.
Then it changes. Fire Coming out of the Monkey's Head is a spoken word track telling a story of a volcano called monkey exploding killing an island's inhabitants. The last two tracks are really one long song. These feature a fantastic sounding choir to an energetic beat that really just makes you smile, and really how better to end a CD?
When most music these days sounds similar and CDs sound like 14 versions of one song, Demon Days does none of that. It is unique, different, and sounds absolutly fantastic doing that.
Demon Days Review - Much More Creative
I remember first hearing the Gorillaz through a promo on Cartoon Network, no joke. There used to be a programming block called Toonami and I remember hearing about the Gorillaz from time to time, and they would feature a music video here and there. The Gorillaz first album was unique, blending beats and lyrics and synths in ways that are too creative to describe. But their second album, Demon Days, brings it to a new level. The overall vibe to this album gives first-time listeners and Gorillaz fans an experience. This is a must have no matter what type of music you appreciate.
