iTunes Review

On their sophomore effort brother and sister duo Ryan (guitar/vocals, writing) and Molly Guildermond (vocals) morphed from a quirky folk-pop outfit to a unique and smart indie-pop band. Drums are big and crisp, synths give way to strings, guitars jig and jag, and the vocal parts hopscotch and play like a kid in the park (Debra-Jean Creelman adds another layer of vocals on this recording). “O My Heart” is a sweetly barbed, hook-heavy number with a vocal arrangement that recalls both the Pixies and Imperial Teen (“Body of Years” also has a Pixie-ish energy driving it). Ryan Guildermond has a fanciful way with words: The twisted pop gem “Hayloft” is an eerily chirpy tune about clandestine lovers having their heads blown off, and “Ghosting” is a gentle plea from the other side: “I will be kind and ...sweet, if you stop staring through me...” Recalling the Fiery Furnaces, a couple of tracks play with acrobatic vocals, colorful instrumental textures and mid-tune costume changes: “Wisdom,” a silly, mood-shifting song about improving one’s intellectual capacity, breaks for trumpet and twinkling acoustic guitars; violins bookend “Body,” a plea to relieve the storyteller of a body that has become a bother. Good times, all around.

Brilliance

These guys return in full stride with another genre-bending masterpiece. Slows down on a couple of songs, but contains enough absolutely brilliant tracks do merit repetitive listening. Wrecking ball stands out in my mind as one of the most enjoyable songs I've listened to in some time

A band that deserves a review

I was terrified when this album came out since their first album was one of my all time favorites. I thank my lucky stars that Mother Mother's sophomore effort was a complete success. Still retaining their quirky genre-bending music, interesting rythms and unique lyrics, this album is a keeper. Mother Mother is rather hit or miss with most, but if you like them, you will LOVE THIS ALBUM! Be the first to know the canadian indie band that will achieve a lasting cult status.

Amazing sophmore album

This album is amazing, every single song is soo perfect, bravo

Playing smart and amiable folk-rock with an alternative edge, biting wit, and a jazzy sense of sophistication, Mother Mother hails from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and true to their name they started out as a family affair. Guitarist and singer Ryan Guldemond had been writing songs and wanted to start playing them at local clubs. Feeling the tunes needed harmonies, he asked his sister Molly Guldemond to join him. Molly invited her friend Debra-Jean Creelman to add her voice to the mix, and...
