Headed for Prominence
With this new record, Burr is headed not just for local prominence but also for recognition on a national level. O Ye Devastator is a terrific collection of tunes that can certainly stand on their own. A unique brew of traditional Americana (“Chief of Police”), folk twang (“Red, Red”), indie-rock jams (“Public Dance”), and even alt-country (“High Blood”) is endowed with clear lyricism that sends the music home. There’s even more to savor here than on his previous effort, from the opener’s wavering vocals that mirror the nervousness of the album cover’s bride, to the confident chugging of the record’s title track. Burr’s undoubtedly bound to strike a chord on a much wider scale, and deservedly so.
Excellent Album from start to finish
I recently discovered Doug through the great DFW area radio station 91.7 KXT and have absolutely fallen in love with his ability to convey such emotion thru his lyrics and music. The album has a dicernable weight to it that makes it far more enjoyable to listen too. I wouldn't call it an easy listening experience because the whole lyrical and musical package demand attention without being overbearing. It is a work of art, as are all his albums. Rarely do I find anyone who so meticulously creates a more perfect setting than I have found in Mr. Burr. Everything is pitch perfect in delivery and nothing seems out of place or contrived. I don't like to compare to other musicians and I won't. However, the tone is serious but yields great gentleness in several songs.
I cannot reccomend this album enough.
underrated....
i am sad that it took me so long to discover mr. burr. i am, however doing my best to make sure that others don't have to live without him. this is another great album from a great writer.
