Album Review

Yellowcard makes its major-label debut with Ocean Avenue. This SoCal punk-pop fivesome slightly softens the edges found on its previous two albums in what is an attempt to win over the TRL crowd. Regardless of the reasons why, Yellowcard works with that familiar formula of spastic, crunchy guitar licks, emo-inspired lyrics, and vocals tailored for that tinny, whiny effect. Some say it's been done before, and by 2003 it surely had, but Yellowcard seems to not give a care about it because Ocean Avenue delivers despite of its catchy recipe. The 13-song set switches in mood and tempo for a layered, dynamic sound, and vocalist Ryan Key could very well chasten Dashboard Confessional's Christopher Carrabba about keeping things short and simple. Songs like "Way Away" and "Empty Apartment" thrive on the basics of rock & roll — foliated guitars weaved in between high-speed percussion. But that's not all. Yellowcard has a secret component when it comes to crafting its own punk-inspired presentation. Violinist Sean Mackin is impressively skilled, and his talent allows Yellowcard to have a bit of an advantage in making something sound original and fresh. "Believe" and the acoustic guitars of "One Year, Six Months" are proof of that. Ocean Avenue isn't exactly outstanding in the sense that this band has done something outrageously different, but it is a worthy collection of songs with a real heart; that alone shows that Yellowcard is on to something solid. [The 2005 Malaysian Edition includes an additional CD featuring three bonus tracks, five live cuts, and additional bonus content on CD-ROM.]

The Perfect Album

To me, this is the most beautiful, awesome album ever produced. Each song flows after the next like a symphony and with every song I get this feeling of awe that I never expereince during any other song during any other album. Way Away and Ocean Avenue were the first songs to make an impression on me. As I made my way through the entire album for the first time, I was struck by that weird sense of listening to perfection and continued to tell myself that it couldn't possibly get any better--and then it did. I think after the end of Back Home I sat there with headphones on sitting silently, completely overtaken. Every time I listen to this album something else jumps out at me as spectacular and perfect. Hundreds of listens later, Only One is my favorite song of all time and Empty Apartement and Back Home are up there with Way Away. But really, it is impossilbe for me to tell you to buy this song or to buy that song because while each song is beautiful in and of itself, the greatness of this album for me is revealed when listened to from start to finish, every song. I consider this possibly the best 13 dollars I've ever spent and with this work of art Yellowcard has changed and continues to change my life

Still their best album...

This is how Yellowcard is ment to be, medium-core pop... not the slow pop junk that most of Paper Walls is...

One Word - AWESOME

This album is truly amazing!
