iTunes Review

Implicit in the music on the Dirty Three’s Ocean Songs is a sense of awe at the grandeur of the natural world. The Australian trio reigns in its more abrasive instincts in favor of a sober yet emotionally resonant approach that owes much to classical forms. In a real sense, the album is an excursion into rock chamber music, harkening back to earlier experiments by John Cale, Brian Eno and others along these lines. Whatever their antecedents, these tracks are highly individual in concept and execution, with violinist Warren Ellis, guitarist Mick Turner, and drummer Jim White prodding at their self-imposed limits. Ocean Songs is best approached as a suite that moves from a hypnotic introductory movement (“Distant Shore”) to a haunting finale (“Ends of the Earth”). In between are such high points as the sprawling “Authentic Celestial Music,” the deceptively placid “Backwards Voyager” and the intricately textured “Sea Above, Sky Below.” Ellis is masterful at weaving minimal yet telling phrases around Turner’s resolute chords and White’s understated yet vibrant percussion work.

to die for

i don't know what to say. listen listen listen! dirty three is amazing! i loveee "the restless waves" "sea above, sky below" and "last horse on the sand" are ...perfect!

Lush and Sweeping

Impossible to categorize, but equally impossible to ignore, Ocean Songs is a teriffic album. Inspried apparently by the ocean and the sea, these songs are less literal "sea songs" (think The Decemberists' The Mariner's Revenge Song) and more of the band's musical inspiration. Much like Explosions in the Sky, in that it is musical, without lyrics, songs about something specific, in this case, the sea and voyages and stories within the music. Slightly jazzy, with many strings, while not losing the guitar sound. Even a touch of surf guitar, subtle, but appreciated on an album with such nautical references. Fun, beautiful,a nd inspiring. Great for background music, or for listening inently to. Fans of Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, and closer to Do Make Say Think.

OK, but other albums are better

I prefer Dirty Three's self-titled album and Horse Stories (which, for some weird reason, isn't available on I-tunes). However, this is still worth a spin. The sounds are much more melodic and relaxing, if a little repetitive on this record.
