Album Review
First of all, Oceanborn is a huge step when thinking about Nightwish's debut album Angels Fall First. All the elements of folk music and ambience are forgotten, and instead Nightwish have concentrated to using Tarja Turunen's wide voice and playing pure heavy metal. Or, well, another describing term could be opera metal. Drama and a variety of melodies are used effects, but overruling all the expectations, Nightwish have used them very well. Songs are catchy, but they have a long lifetime. Also, the whole band does great work: even though they seem like another Dream Theater-wannabe band, Holopainen and Vuorinen use their instruments with patience and don't slope into unneeded tricking. So everything seem to be alright, but the album as a whole lacks a little bit of diversity, and sometimes falls into repeating itself. The songs are, however, very strong, and the album as a whole works great. Oceanborn is, so far, the most successful album of Nightwish. Awesome
Nightwish is by far my favorite band, and i have to say that this is their bast album yet. Still, iTunes needs to get Over the Hills and Far Away!
Great album glad iTunes got it
First thing's first: this is not their best album. If you are new to Nightwish, start out with Once and then Dark Passion Play. Then go backwards until Angels Fall First. This is album is a good buy on iTunes becuase it comes with 4 extra songs not on the album when you buy it from the stores. I believe Nightquest is the best song on the CD, and then Passion and the Opera. If you are a great Nightwish fan like I am, buy this album immediately. But if you're just beginning, go for Once first.
Yay!
Their second album is an improvement over Angels Fall First (not that it was terrible, or anything, but you can definately tell they've moved into a new direction with Oceanborn). The opening and second tracks are among my all-time favorites. This is the album Tuomas said (...in an interview; I won't pretend I know him personally O_o) that he actually considered it to be more of Nightwish's first album, and he considered Angels Fall First more of their demo. This iTunes-version of the album has some bonus tracks that you don't get if you buy Oceanborn in stores. If you'd rather not get the whole album, here are some must-haves: - Stargazers: Great riffs and vocals; it's one of those hard-to-song-along-to songs. Pretty fast-paced and makes for a great opening track. - Gethsemane: If you're a lyric-y sort of person, give this one a listen. Tuomas is a great lyricist (in fact, Nightwish is one of the few bands where I actually listen to the lyrics). Tarja's voice compliments the mood of this song wonderfully. - Nightquest: Another great opening riff with great guitar work. This style of song doesn't exactly work for Tarja's voice, but she pulls it off. - Walking In the Air: Not everyone's going to love this one. It's a cover, but they did a great job with it. Listen to this one if you're in a mellow mood. Overall, you can tell they've definately found their unique sound with this album.
