Album Review
Prog rockers Dream Theater tallied 19 years as a band with the release of Octavarium, but in listening you're apt to suspect otherwise. As a collective they remain as tight as they were on 2003's obsessively dark Train of Thought (like all music-school outfits, they've exacted an all-for-one formula that doesn't allow a single player more than his share of swagger), but a post-hardcore edge — call it a leap into 2005 — has invaded their pledge of allegiance to theatrical heavy rock. Hear it on "I Walk Beside You" and "The Answer Lies Within," both of which, at under five minutes, play like charming haikus from a band known for its epic poetry, and also on the orchestra-backed 20-plus-minute final cut, which skips around from Pink Floyd to Rush to Black Sabbath influences, stopping off every so often at a place fans of My Chemical Romance might find familiar. As with all the band's discs, guitars loom large and both doom and redemption seem no further than the next twisted verse. What's changed is Dream Theater's commitment to carrying on their reputation as underground progressive rock's classicists, and it seems well-timed.

Genius!
the only thing that can do this album justice is a review from start to finish. Root of all Evil: Godly, one of my favorite DT songs of all time. Heavy, mellow, and beautiful all at the same time. Brilliant vocals, great guitar/keyboard solo tradeoff, just an excellent song. 5/5 Answer: This one shocked me, didn't think they would follow up a monster like RoAE with a ballad... but this is a beautiful song nonetheless. Not much flash to it, but enough to keep you listening. 3.5/5 Walls: Heavy, but slow. very melodic. For the intro, did Petrucci like... duct tape his whammy bar down or something? Oh well, still cool. 4/5 Beside You: This is actually quite similar to U2, but about 10 times better. Very radio-ready, so glad they didn't make a video for it, would'ver gotten annoying easily. Good for a few listens, but gets a little old after a while. catchy. 3/5 Panic Attack: Absolute Monster. It will melt your face off. Heaviest song on the album, but yet one of the most melodic? Excellent bridge, and great guitar work the whole way through. Well done, John. 5/5 Never Enough: Sounds a little like Muse. Don't like Muse, but I like the song. Very cool keyboard, good lyrics. 4/5 Sacrificed Sons: Excellent song about 9/11, One of the best choruses I've ever heard. Very good musicianship on this one. 5/5 Octavarium: I won't ruin this track for you. One of DT's best songs. Get the score version as well for Jordan's continuum fingerboard, it's the coolest thing you'll ever hear. 5.5/5
It's All About Balance
One thing you can say about Dream Theater is they never keep us waiting too long for a new album. For those who have paid attention, 6 Degrees, Train of Thought and Octavarium came out in such rapid succession that we barely had the opportunity to let each one sink in properly. While this is usually indicative of the transparent, mass-produced, MTV-friendly jock-metal or boy bands, Dream Theater proves to us time and time again that they are simply one of the most talented bands of the past 20 years. In some other reviews I’ve read that fans we’re disappointed with this album because it was not as heavy as ToT. Indeed- it is not as heavy. But one on the best things about DT is that they never repeat themselves. Each album is significantly different from the previous one, yet they still retain that very distinct DT sound. Octavarium is no different. While ToT was arguably their heaviest album to date, it was perhaps their most well balanced. From the inspirational and uplifting ballad “The Answer Lies Within” to the gritty, heavy and often angry “Panic Attack” and “Never Enough,” Octavarium delivers the best of nearly everything DT has to offer. It ends with the title track, which takes us through what might be DT’s magnum opus as they pay tribute to almost every one of their influences. The song is 23 minutes long, and perhaps one of their best. Another common complaint about this album of which I must make mention is the song “I Walk Beside You.” Many people have said this sounds like a U2 song. Honestly I can’t understand this. It sounds NOTHING like U2. Besides, the guys in DT can whip out songs that clock in at over 10 minutes and that switch between 6 different time signatures in their sleep. If they want to do a straight-up rock song now and again, I’m all for it. In fact, I think it’s one of the best songs on the album. Octavarium has certainly grown on me in the 6 months since its release. I think in time, I will find it to be one of my favorite overall DT albums. Hopefully others who may have been a bit hard on it will too.
Amazing
I listened to this album on 5.1 surround sound. I swear that for the 20-some minutes of the last track (Octavarium), God himself came down from the heavens and walked around my living room. Buy this album.
