iTunes Review

The first six songs on the Off the Bone collection are from The Cramps’ very first release: Gravest Hits, recorded in 1977 with producer Alex Chilton at Ardent Studios in Memphis. These remain some of the band’s all-time best recordings, achieving an ideal balance between low-rent swing and bristly aggression. For a band that recorded a sea of covers, this contains two of their very best: Peggy Lee’s “Fever” and Ricky Nelson’s “Lonesome Town.” The band’s interpretations are singular. Lux Interior sings each song with maximum feeling, communicating an unambiguous vulnerability even as he vivisects the austere delivery of the preceding generation. The rest of the tracks here are other recordings from The Cramps’ glorious early years, including those made after they relocated to Los Angeles and hooked up with prodigal guitarist Kid Congo Powers. These songs turn loose the simmering internal energy of “Fever” and “Lonesome Town.” “Drug Train,” “The Crusher," and “Uranium Rock” are uproarious dance songs, as sincere as Jerry Lee Lewis in their intent to unleash fun upon hungry miscreant youth.

Ok...

I have no clue what this is, but I like it... I think.

awesome

Uranium Rock

Cool Psychobilly album

The Cramps have a distinctive sound - with twanging rockabilly guitars, a sparse guitar-and-drumkit sound, lyrics that ellicit memories of '50s horror movies, and the cool-spooky vocals of Lux Interior. The songs feature clever lyrics, surprising infectious beats, and enough raw energy to pull anyone up out of the dumps. I dare anyone to listen to a Cramps album and not grin!

Biography

Formed: 1976 in Sacramento, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

Conjuring a fiendish witches' brew of primal rockabilly, grease-stained '60s garage rock, vintage monster movies, perverse and glistening sex, and the detritus and effluvia of 50 years of American pop culture, the Cramps are a truly American creation much in the manner of the Cadillac, the White Castle hamburger, the Fender Stratocaster, and Jayne Mansfield. Often imitated, but never with the same psychic resonance as the original, the Cramps celebrate all that is dirty and gaudy with a perverse...
