Somewhat after his days in the Jackson Five, but before the moon-walking breakthrough on the Motown 25 TV special, a more mature Michael Jackson emerged. It happened most definitvely on this album, as Jackson found his solo star identity — still lean and clean, but with a Quincy Jones-produced sheen. Dance-floor workouts such "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," "Working Day and Night," "Rock with You," and "Off the Wall" allowed Jackson to take his falsetto into uncharted waters. No Jackson album would be complete without a corny ballad, represented here by Jackson's fake sobs on "She's Out Of My Life." Off the Wall proves that before he actually branded himself The King Of Pop, he was undeniably all that, both slick and funky at the same time.

When Michael was "The Man"
Let me tell you all that "Off the Wall" is "Off the Hook". It had a string of hits starting with the title track and including, "Don't Stop'Til You Get Enough", "Rock With You", "Workin' Day and Night" and so on. This is the album that establish Michael as a fantastic solo artists and began what we call today "Popstars". Ask any one of them from Justin Timberlake to Madonna and see if they don't own this album and love it. West coast or East.

Just as good as Thriller
This album is just as good as Thriller, but just not as diverse. If you want THE disco/funk/pop album, this is it. Only 2 songs hold the album back. The cheeze fest "Girlfriend" and the sappy "She's out of my Life". However the other tracks make this album a 5 star. 4.5 stars at the worst. Listen to the bass line on Get On the Floor. Do I even have to write anything else after that? When it comes to Michael Jackson's solo work, get Off the Wall, and Thriller . . . and you've got two of the best pop albums of all time. Only go past Thriller if you are a hardcore fan. I've bought Bad and all the others . . . but these two albums are his peak.
