Album Review
Moving on somewhat from the epic and sincere post-grunge of their last two hit albums, 2003's Beautiful Letdown and 2005's Nothing Is Sound, California Christian-emo rockers Switchfoot deliver a lively and laid-back effort with 2006's Oh! Gravity. Perhaps influenced by the post-punk of such contemporaries as Franz Ferdinand and Futureheads, Switchfoot smartly keep things stripped down and to the point this time. To these ends, the title track and leadoff single "Oh! Gravity" is a poppy blast of '80s new wave. Similarly engaging, the punchy and playful Mott the Hoople-esque anthem "Amateur Lovers" is a truly inspired creative turn for lead singer/guitarist Jonathan Foreman and his cohorts. But lest longtime fans fear the band have completely changed their sound, don't worry, as tracks such as the blissful mid-tempo ballad "Awakening" and the driving rocker "Head over Heels (In This Life)" retain the band's knack for mixing heartfelt lyrics with catchy melodies that tug at your soul.

Even though it was a warming up process, I grew to really love this CD!
Here's what I think of each song: 1) Oh Gravity - 9/10 Awesome keyboard and guitars! I like the shouts too. I just wish it was longer. 2) American Dream - 10/10 pretty typical rhythm, but they fit a lot of guitar riffs in each beat . I think this song is one of the album highlights. Check out the lyrics too! 3) Dirty Second Hands - 10/10 This song has the most complex rhythem on this CD. I love the mix of accoustic guitar, electric guitar, rap, and singing too! 4) Awakening - 8/10 It has good lyrics and a powerful chorus, but it's a little slow for my taste. 5) Circles - 9/10 even though it's a sad song, the guitar picking is amazing (especially at the beginning) and the minor tonality suits the song well. 6) Amature Lovers - 5/10 This is probably my least favorite song on this album. Even though it's kind of catchy, I don't really like how they rap the lyrics in the chorus. 7) Faust Midas And Myself - 10/10 Really good message! I also like how the electric guitars start right in the middle of the song. Unique and well done! 8) Head Over Heels.. - 8/10 I like the accidentals in the verses and the (again) powerful chorus. My favorite part of this song, however, is the bridge. 9) Yesterdays - 9/10 This is a really sad song! It's probably talking about the death of a loved one. Still, it's very well written. 10) Burn Out Bright - 8/10 - again, not my favorite, but not bad. I do like the energy in this song. 11) 4-12 - 6/10 I like the message of this song a lot. As for the sound though, I've heard better Switchfoot songs. The clapping in the background isn't my favorite, and the ending annoys me. 12) Let Your Love Be Strong - 10/10 This one is another one of my favorites! Beautiful accoustic guitar, and artistic, deep, and Spiritual lyrics.
Hope this review helps you out. Again, I really love this album!
