iTunes Review
Gifted pianist, singer, and arranger Harry Connick, Jr. is a New Orleans native and Oh, My Nola honors his beloved hometown and the horrors it has experienced since Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005. Though there are plenty of poignant moments here, overall Connick chooses to celebrate his city and the irrepressible joy it represents by performing a dozen covers that showcase several musical styles associated with New Orleans, including stride piano, Cajun, big band jazz, pop standards, and R&B. He includes songs by such Crescent City luminaries as Lee Dorsey, Dr. John, and Allen Toussaint, and works some spectacular and unexpected magic on the classics “Jambalaya (On the Bayou),” “Won’t You Come Home, Bill Bailey?,” “Elijah Rock,” and “Hello Dolly.” Connick also contributes four moving originals that express his sorrow and frustration in a most poetic and personal way; in particular, “All These People” and the title track are superb, and they effectively capture the despair and sadness, as well as a sense of camaraderie, brought about by the hurricane. And as one would expect the music is first-rate — funky, loose, and swinging throughout — making this a heartfelt tribute to the city and its people.

Re: Looking for a buck.
For "whatever yo" in response to "looking for a buck..." Do your homework, moron. "The album will be released in October on the same day as Columbia Records issues Harry's vocal tribute Oh My Nola. A portion of Harry'a royalties of both discs will benefit New Orleans Habitat Musicians’ Village, the project conceived by Harry and Marsalis Music founder Branford Marsalis to provide affordable housing in the city’s Upper Ninth Ward for displaced musicians and other families. Chanson du Vieux Carré stands out among current New Orleans tributes in that it was conceived and executed well before Hurricane Katrina." -harryconnickjr.com This is just one of many relief projects he is involved in. Now if you'd like him to take himself and his money back to L.A., then so be it. I, for one, appreciate the things that he and Branford Marsalis are doing to give back to the communities that they call home.
I've been waiting for this since "She" and "Star Turtle"!
Once again Harry has produced a stellar collection of tunes with the very essence of being in the French Quarter in New Orleans. I love the standards and Christmas cd's but this is where he really shines in my opinion and the song "all these people" in reference to hurricane katrina is very vivid. Great musicians, great song writing, stripped down and in the pocket!....wish it was a double album!
Classic Harry Connick, Jr. through and through!
I had been looking for this on iTunes for the last day or so after seeing the CD in a store. I found it tonight and downloaded it immediately. I am a huge HCJ fan and have nearly every recording of his. When I saw this CD about his hometown of NOLA (New Orleans, Louisiana) I knew it would be something I'd want. Keep playing and singing, Harry. I think of NOLA with every cut and remember my first visit to the 'crescent city.'
