Album Review

Where Arieto surprised with its ambition, both in its political content and in its lyrical romanticism, this release retreats to a predictable and pleasant competency. The rhythm and horn sections percolate along, keeping everything upbeat, and the leader's voice sounds confident. Why otherwise sane record producers periodically decide to use childrens' choruses remains a mystery. The title song would have been the epitome of well-crafted Latin pop without this lapse toward the end.

Ojala Que Llueva Cafe

In 1989, 440 was coming off the departure of Maridalia Hernandez. Mudanza y Acarreo had been their first commercially successful effort in Dominican Republic. This time JLG became solo lead singer for the first time as well as composer, and the result is history. Visa is classical merengue as well as a strong social statement, and Ojala Que Llueva is lirical and permeates with love. Angel mixes venezuelan rhythms and soft merengue beautifully. Not a single song in the album is filler. The only question is why did Apple reduce the original album to the present 7 cuts. This is unforgivable.

SWEET & REFINED!!!

JUST GREAT , LIKE ANY OTHER JLG & 440 CREATIONS! NOW WHY THE iTUNES PEOPLE DID NOT INCLUDE "WOMAN DEL CALLAO" 1 OF THE BEST CUTS IN THE ALBUM ?

Juan Luis Guerra

Their debut made little impact, but for their next effort, Guerra and 440 began adding merengue and lightning-quick riffs of "perico ripiao," and suddenly found...
