Album Review

Hardcore punk, post-hardcore, hardcore metal...it's getting increasingly difficult to identify what group belongs to which subgenre circa the early 21st century — a case in point being the St. Catharines, Ontario-based quintet Alexisonfire. On their fourth full length overall, 2009's Old Crows/Young Cardinals, you get a bit of all three aforementioned styles, with a healthy dose of melody stirred into the sonic blender to boot. And this hodgepodge approach should certainly bring Alexisonfire some U.S. rock radio airplay (they already scored their breakthrough hit back home on their previous album, 2006's Crisis), especially such standout tracks as the leadoff single, "Young Cardinals," as well as the album-opening "Old Crows," "The Northern," and the surprisingly tranquil and sweetly sung album closer, "Burial."

Their best album yet

by t4kit0

I think that this is their best album to date. First and foremost, the screamer really refined his technique, and it sounds a LOT better that in previous albums. He went from being just another far too "gurgally", throaty screamer to being my all time second favorite, beat out only by Dustin from Thrice. The songs have a feel reminiscent of their older work, but with more hard-rock driving riffs and bigger choruses. The lyrics are great, have great metaphor, and I feel are poignant without being too preachy. It would be a shame to miss out on this album, I've listened to it beginning to end at least 10 times now and thoroughly enjoyed every second of it.

Crisis was a truly amazing album and this album just doesn't do it for me like Crisis did. But it's not bad...
