With a successful world tour and his “Hallelujah” becoming a first-call contemporary standard, the past few years have been particularly rewarding for Leonard Cohen. On Old Ideas, his 12th studio album, the iconic singer/songwriter/poet continues his exploration of the spiritual, the sensual, and the cycle of life over the course of 10 songs. His unexcitable, half-spoken baritone is a calming, lyrical guide, with vocalists Dana Glover and The Webb Sisters and longtime collaborators Jennifer Warnes and Sharon Robinson providing tonal contrasts. With dual piano and organ accompaniment, “Show Me the Place” has the solemn levity of a modern hymn. The bluesy “Darkness” and the cabaret-friendly “Different Sides” showcase Cohen’s noirish and uptempo sides. “Banjo" has a rural North Americana arrangement, appropriately enough, with an unexpected, Dixieland-like clarinet-and-trumpet interlude.

Still Golden

The man with the Golden voice once again blesses us by allowing us a small glimpse into his heart and mind. Old age has taken the once abstract poetry of leonard and refined to to be concise and clear. After he is gone, there will never be another Leonard Cohen which can not be said about many other artist. His latest album brings back more stringed instruments instead of the keyboard that dominated his last several albums. From start to finish, it sounds like your grandpa teaching theology, that is of course; if your grandpa happens to be the coolest old guy around.

The voice, the lyrics & the overall songs and sounds - remarkable

I'll let others dive into the deep and details explaining why this new offering from Leonard Cohen is great. I'll only say that listening to this new album makes me very happy...I love it and love that I can still be moved by new music.
