iTunes Review

Old Mad Joy finds The Gourds recording at Levon Helm’s studio in Woodstock, N.Y., underscoring the quintet’s sonic debt to The Band. The presence of Bob Dylan guitarist Larry Campbell as producer likewise highlights their affinity for classic folk-rock. This time out, singer/guitarist Kevin Russell delivers a dose of festive gospel-swing (“I Want It So Bad”), juggles bittersweet biblical imagery (“Two Sparrows”), and serves up a soulful celebration of love (“Eyes of a Child”). He’s complemented by Jimmy Smith’s zany, non sequitur–studded tunes, with “Drop the Charges,” “Marginalized,” and “Melchert” standing out for their supple grooves and poker-faced lunacy. Adding yet another color is Max Johnston’s “Haunted,” a spacious country-road ballad illuminated by Campbell’s pedal-steel work. Collectively, The Gourds play with the sort of loose-limbed camaraderie that comes with years of bar-band gigging. Their easygoing charm can’t disguise the quirky brilliance and heartfelt charm within these tracks. Old Mad Joy is an irresistible Americana oddball gem.

Want it so bad

A very soulful mix of rock, country and blues. I like alot of their stuff but this one really stands out. I Want It So Bad is a serious killer.

Weak - Except for "Two Sparrows"

Gourds albums usually have three or four really good songs, but "Two Sparrows" is the only song on this one that I have any interest in ever hearing again. Kevin Russell contributes only a couple of tunes, and they're rather pedestrian; very puzzling considering how prolific (and on occasion, how brilliant) he has been in the past. On the whole, an extremely disappointing album.

Gourds do it to it!

A great album and only adds to their dynamic sound and can't wait to hear them live in Burlington!

Biography

Formed: 1992 in Austin, TX

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

The Gourds are a good-time, honky tonkin' band with enough quirk and underground appeal to justify the "alternative" tag in "alternative country-rock." Part of Austin's vibrant scene and popular performers at the city's national music showcase SXSW, the Gourds first gained the attention of the No Depression crowd with the drunken porch jam sound of their debut, Dem's Good Beeble, in 1997. The band's quirks came out more on its follow-up, 1998's Stadium...
