iTunes Review

Old Punch Card is unlike Sam Prekop’s other solo work or that of his band, the Sea and Cake. Old Punch Card is an album that takes its cue from the musique concrète found in electronic music. The album features synths, no vocals, no beats and one guitar. As a result, this album is one that may initially — and subsequently — shock its listeners. But if one sticks around and meditates on the unusual sounds, a certain logic and inner peace will surface. “November September” sounds like a film noir that takes place as the viewer changes channels. “A Places” rumbles with ominous tones swooping in and out of earshot. “Lazy House” finds melodies in what sound like glass bottles. “The Silhouettes” adds extra colors to its frantic, yet still somehow tranquil, pace. The bonus cut, “In Calendar” is reminiscent of the minimalist works of Steve Reich. “Notebooks” veers towards found sounds. Anyone searching for linear melodies or traditional song structures will be sorely disappointed. Anyone up for an adventure into a bizarre new world will find the soundtrack right here.

Customer Reviews

Exciting new direction for Sea and Cake frontman.

"Old Punch Card" is unlike anything else Sam Prekop has done. Across its nine tracks you’ll find zero vocals, no beats, and only one instance of guitar. It was inspired by “early” musique concrète, electronic music and free improv as well as “cartoon” music maker Raymond Scott, Portuguese composer Nuno Canavarro, and David Behrman. While most definitely different from previous outings, it is nonetheless compelling and a worthwhile journey for the listener who has a little more patience that to write it off after one sitting.

What the #%&@?

Sam (let them eat cake) Prekop might know what's intended here but, I sure don't.

I'm a big fan, but...
I would have loved to have been in the room when he previewed it for the Thrill Jockey execs.

A longtime pillar in the Chicago underground community and architect of the post-rock sound, Sam Prekop first gained renown at the helm of Shrimp Boat before becoming the leader of the Sea and Cake, whose fusion of styles both in and out of rock was both creative and experimental while remaining highly listenable. Prekop holds considerable stature in the Chicago scene, so it isn't surprising that when he released his self-titled debut solo LP in 1999 (on Thrill Jockey Records, itself a cornerstone...
