iTunes Review

Whether Mark Kozelek records as a solo artist or as a member of Red House Painters or Sun Kil Moon, it is his music that comes forth. The other members provide the supportive atmosphere, the occasional jarring riff, and the steady, slowly ticking foundation, but the songs — their poetry, their inescapable melodies, their sense of joy or dread — belong to Kozelek. 2001’s Old Ramon was delayed several years by record label difficulties and finds the group further distancing themselves from the ethereal moody pond of their earlier 4AD recordings — though the gorgeous nine minute slow perk of “Void” recalls those shimmering days. There’s a churning middle-American classic rock to the acoustic-electric guitar weave of “Byrd Joel,” an impressive guitar thunderstorm histrionic to the 11-minute “River” and a punchy, naturalist slant to “Cruiser.” Twisted, obsessive and romantic love remain his common theme, however Kozelek also pays homage to one of his early heroes, John Denver, with “Golden” (he also organized the Denver tribute CD, Take Me Home) and to his cat with “Wop-a-Din-Din.”

You were endless fuel burning fast and burning free

Old Ramon gives a shot of joyous, hard-rocking energy to RHP's traditional lyrical melancholy sound. These songs slide into my soul and sustain and comfort me. "Void" in particular is a masterpiece, a hypnotic, gorgeous, sprawling meditation on life, love and art. "River" is a darkly surreal fragment of a dream. "Golden" is a perfect, jewel-like little ode to John Denver, inspiration and remembrance of things lost. The only song I don't much care for is "Kavita," which *sounds* great but which has, in my opinion, the weakest lyrics of any song on Old Ramon. Mark Kozelek's expressive, honeyed voice floats through it all in sweet perfection. Curious? Try downloading "Byrd Joel," "Void" or "Golden." If you buy the album, you'll make your dollar back by getting "River" for free. If you're new to RHP and like this album, I recommend Songs for a Blue Guitar as your next stop. Mark Kozelek has also released two solo albums available on iTunes (Rock and Roll Singer and What's Next to the Moon), and two albums under the name Sun Kil Moon (Ghosts of the Lost Highway and Tiny Cities). Check 'em out; I don't think you'll be disappointed. Enjoy!

mm-hmmm

very good, but if you like this you should definetly check out Sun Kil Moon. Kozelek's best work definetly resides on Ghosts of the Great Highway. Safe travels...

***** This Album Is A Must Own 4 Any Painters Fan. *****

Okay, so you have barely heard of Mark Kozelek or the Painters...Old Ramon offers some of their best work. there is no true genre, but this album has hints of rock and emo which combine wonderfully with the rhythmic nature of the album. This wonderful album is in my oppinion a must own, especially if you dont own any other Red House Paitners albums. It's easy to feel vocals are found throughout but, I truly recomend Void, Cruiser, and (my favorite) Between Days.

Biography

Formed: 1989 in CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Red House Painters was primarily the vehicle of singer/songwriter Mark Kozelek, an evocative, compelling performer of rare emotional intensity. Like Mark Eitzel of American Music Club, to whose work the Painters were invariably compared and to whom their early success owed a tremendous debt, Kozelek laid his soul bare on record, conjuring harrowingly acute tales of pain, despair, and loss; unlike Eitzel, Nick Drake, and other poets of decay, Kozelek's autobiographical songs walked their tightrope...
