Omen

I am a massive fan of Soulfly, however, this album was just....'MEH!'. We all have our favorite album of thiers, do we not? This is not one of them for me. It just feels like Soulfly made "Omen" as a 'contract commitment fill'. Yes, I still liked it, but it did NOT have the feel that I liked with thier previous works. If you are a Soulfly fan, you will like the album. Just be warned that they went into a different 'edge' with it. The best tracks for ME were: Kingdom, Rise Of The Fallen, and the instrumental remake of Led Zepplins' "Four Sticks".

Soulfly, you are still awesome!!!! Love the music regardless!!!! Keep bringin it!

first review

great overall album. Soulfly takes a new approach with some songs, changing some of their heavy riffs to slightly more melodic ones. While this may not be for some, it may be a great change for others. I was pleasantly suprised at the level of playing for all instruments in the band. Soulfly is not usually remembered for their groundbreaking solos, but they proved they can be with this album. If you only buy one song...make it Great Depression.

A straight B, nothing more

Well, after the last 3 stunning records -Dark Ages, Cavalera Conspiracy's Inflicted and Conquer- could Max and the boys make it 4 for 4? Unfortumately not. All the ingredients are here, but that's about it. There's very little of the intensity and creativity of the previous releases. This record stays on the general Soulfly theme but seems to be going through the motions. The song structures are very simple and even Max's lyrics seemed to be reduced to finding an appropriate, if tired, title for a song, and repeat it over and over and over. Even the most die hard fan could not compare this release to anything on Dark Ages. Maybe the record label needed another release asap. Anyway, great band but boring record. A straight B is a failing grade for someone of Max's genius.

Biography

Formed: 1997

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Upon his exit from Sepultura in late 1996, singer/guitarist/songwriter Max Cavalera almost automatically set out to form his next musical endeavor, the ultra-heavy Soulfly. Besides leaving one of the most popular heavy metal bands in the world, which he'd co-founded in the early '80s, he also had to deal with the unsolved murder of Dana Wells, his stepson and best friend. Using music as therapy to overcome his depression, Cavalera put together a band that included Roy "Rata" Mayorga on drums (ex-Thorn)...
