Far West Almanac Review (LA) by J.R. Sage
IF you’ve ever had the most reverent intentions when trying to explain a simple, yet emotional point to a friend, but just couldn’t connect for some damned reason, then a lesson can be learned from Kati O’Toole...If you chant a step-by-step report of your doings, you’ll figure out why the grinding concept of love simply has to fit in with the trick of everything else we are all left to deal with. Each song is a thought out episode of general concern. Chimey pianos and pedal weeps weeps take command when Kati’s focused narrative gets weak. Nothing is rushed around these album’s parts. Whether the woman is waking up right side or wrong, her experience is valued and underlined. The black and white photo on the cover is Kati’s Great Aunt on an ancient sort of mountain neighboring motorcycle. She appears ready to be cute, but all in all fiery if need be. Not only does this correlate the accompanying tracks to a longing for Kati to be true to her heritage of traveling, but also to an old-timey desire. This plays through on tracks like “Just The Way It Goes”, as an old 78-rpm sound intro’s the banjo and dainty attitude on feeling lonely in a relationship. On “Tattoo,” O’Toole wanders around thinking of someone not seeing more than they were. It’s tracks like these where I’m glad the ambient edge makes a name for itself. It’s unlike standouts such as the opener “Song Of The North” and its pre-thought syllables reverberate with the emotion of a Thin Lizzy verse and the daunt of Radiohead’s “Karma Police.” Even better is “Sunshine,” where sweet jazz piano chords lay down a blue carpet for hypnotic double-tracked vox. ”I thank God for the sunshine, in my eyes,” sounds honest even with its swirly background intact. An adverse electric drum effect invades near the end, the eventual machination of modern days. Ashland is a street name in many places. Here, it’s specifically referring to where Kati lived in Santa Monica. She doesn’t live there anymore. That’s in tune with this sung diary of a woman looking through pictures, being troubled by the city, whose “roots held on as (she) grew.” A modern, more pop twist on the female folk singer is the forumula, the Carole King-ish sing-along “Move” not withstanding.
