Album Review
Four fine albums deep into a career with no Top Ten pop singles to his name, Musiq Soulchild went for broke with the single released prior to his fifth album. At least it kinda seemed that way: "Radio" sounded suspiciously like a cash-in on Atlanta snap, à la Dem Franchize Boyz's "Lean wit It, Rock wit It," or even Monica's "Everytime the Beat Drop," but it was a couple years late. It was almost shockingly out of character, if not clumsy and baffling. It appears as the last song on OnMyRadio, an album that, for the most part, sounds otherwise just like a Musiq Soulchild release. Highlights like "Until" and "So Beautiful" show that Musiq continues to thrive most when working with mellow midtempo and ballad material. The latter, a collaboration with Lee "J.R." Hutson (who played a significant role in the excellence of Jill Scott's The Real Thing), is one of the most unassumingly gorgeous cuts he has recorded, and the relatively upbeat and busy "Special" and "Money Right" deserve to be minor hits (at the least). A couple dramatic moments don't quite take full flight, and a handful of tracks are tepid and unmemorable, but OnMyRadio is mostly another set of sturdily constructed laid-back R&B. "Radio" hopefully didn't scare off anyone.

Musiq Soulchild-On My Radio
Paired with fellow R&B singer Avant and also releasing his fifth album is Musiq Soulchild. After Luvanmusiq shined, can Musiq get back to that type of worthy material? Backagain: Soulchild starts things with a slapping drumbeat with plunking piano keys, as a good hook announces his return. The track starts things off nicely, having a good vibe, yet uptempo enough to intrigue listeners. 3/5 Until: On a relatively minimal production, various drum patterns keep things on pace, while Musiq croons nicely on this midtempo, finished with cascading keyboards. Building in the bridge, Soulchild works it nicely and the end result is a beautiful midtempo. 3.5/5 Ifuleave: Orthodox & Ransom deliver a nice duet here with Mary J. Blige & Musiq, as plucking orchestra strings back up the beautiful vocals of the singers. MJB and Musiq go back and forth on this relationship number, as the chemistry blends well. 4/5 Deserveumore: Beautifully produced track here, as this dreamy midtempo blends well with Musiq’s soulful vocals. Strings and guitar back Musiq on this one. 3.5/5 Special: Upbeat with Musiq crooning about a special lady, the bridge works nicely with some guitar, as a unique drum pattern hits. Decent track that lacks a bit in the hook. 3/5 Dearjohn: Warryn “Baby Dubb” Cambell’s piano laden production with snaps is light, while Musiq croons intimately. A nice track that doesn’t quite build up as great as you’d you like, but it’s pleasant. 3/5 Loveofmylife: Very nice track here that has a great bridge and production. Things build nicely and end up taking a celebratory grand exclamation in the hook by Musiq, with guitar’s jamming in the background. A definite highlight that sounds great. 4/5 Moneyright: Uptempo clapping rhythm and piano keys back Musiq, as he sings about how his lady has held him down through all these years. Decent. 3/5 Someone: Lush strings and acoustic guitar production that is reminiscent of Keyshia Cole’s “Love”, Musiq doesn’t quite hit notes like her, but nonetheless a decent ballad. 3/5 Iwannabe: Reggae infused collaboration with Damian Marley serves Musiq well, as the two jam out on this jamaican joint. From the beat to Marley’s appearance, things work out well, with relaxed and cruising mode, Musiq creates a solid chill cut. 3.5/5 Sobeautiful: Musiq delves into his falsetto here, as J.R. Hutson creates the light backdrop of drums and pulsating strings. A solid midtempo that is intimate and a lovely number for the ladies. 4/5 Radio: The lead single that may have scared Musiq fans off, it was a much different sound for Musiq. With a production reminiscent of Atlanta snap or down south club, Musiq definitely did not fit the track and it sounds out of place. Luckily the album didn’t end up like this and this was an experimentive move by Musiq, it’s no wonder that it’s placed as the last track. 2/5 OnMyRadio is another solid release by Musiq, while not being his best, it’s another enjoyable disc that has a few mediocre numbers but also has it’s highlights. Lead single, “Radio” was a misstep that is smartly placed in the back, to allow listeners to enjoy the album and not have to be interrupted by it’s awkward and out of place sound. “Ifuleave”, the MJB & Musiq duet is a solid relationship number that was an obvious highlight, “Loveofmylife” builds very nicely and has some excitement about it that is hard not to like. The reggae infused duet of Damian Marley & Musiq works really well and serves as a nice chill track. Musiq continues to thrive in midtempos and ballads, evident in “Sobeautiful”, a nice light midtempo or ballad that is very intimate and has Musiq flexing his falsetto. Overall another worthy release by Musiq that is a decent R&B release of December. Rating: 7.5 out of 10
Incrdeible... As Usual...
One of the few artists you can always count on for a flawless album.
It's The Same On My Radio
Musiq Soulchild delivers more of the same on OnMyRadio- a mix of excellent ballads and ridiculously corny uptempo numbers. When he's good, he's great. There's four outstanding ballads featured here. The Mary J. Blige-assisted single "IfULeave" is the best of Musiq's career. The other ballads (Someone, SoBeautiful, and DeserveUMore) are all beautiful and hard not to love. Sadly, those gems share space with some of the corniest dance songs in today's R&B. "Radio" is an embarrassing Atlanta snap music knockoff that may have worked two years ago when that sound was popular. The album opener "BackAgain" sounds like the worst of John Legend's uptempo songs. Listen to the ballads and you will love this collection.
